Alfred Yankovic, who prefers not to have anybody refer to him as "Weird Al" anymore, has notified Bermuda and the band and all the Al fans worldwide that he is retiring from the funny music and parody genre in order for him to concentrate on a serious new format.
Yes, Alfred Yankovic has been recording songs with country artists such as Dwight Yoakham, Merle Haggard, The Oak Ridge Boys, Shania Twain, Reba McEntire, LeAnn Rimes, and Billy Ray Cyrus (whose song was parodied by Al himself) recently in Nashville, TN in order for Al to debut as a serious country music artist featuring duets with many top country singers today.
When I asked Weird Al why the sudden change in musical direction, Weird Al replied, and I quote: It's been a wonderful run as being the prince of parodies, but after I realized that the pool of songs where the next big parody would come from dried up suddenly, I spent 27 seconds pondering whether it's worth staying the course, and I decided that I just had to move into a new musical direction in life. I guess I can make country music my next big genre. I am rehearsing some foot-stompin' accordion country with the band, and recently got some guest country musicians to jam with us sometime in the near future.
When I asked if Weird Al is abandoning parody music altogether, he said Heck, no way, in fact, if Jeff Foxworthy and Ray Stevens can become country music comedians, then so can I. I'll be the next big act in the Grand Ole Opry by next Thursday!
Look for his new country album to be released sometime...
