In 1818, since each new state would keep on shrinking the red and white stripes, Congress decided that the U.S. flag would consist of 13 red and white stripes representing the original 13 colonies and 20 stars, with a new star to be added for every new state of the Union.
In 1905, 19,000 people were killed in an earthquake which struck the province of Lahore, then part of British India. The earthquake measured 8.6 on the Richter scale and demolished the towns of Kangra and Dharmsala.
