The first release was the Atomic Jefferson 7" EP in 1993. The record was originally untitled. The name Pest Control was coined because the original cover and insert featured bugs and rodents seemingly fleeing the Atomic pest control robot in his flying saucer. The center labels on the record are true cartoon works of art.
After that Atomic Jefferson was plagued with finding a capable drummer who wasn't graduating from USM and moving away. Little did they know there was a secret fan waiting for the position to open one more time. Darren, also a former member of Legion of Descency, was looking for a new gig because his old band, Mulatto Love Child, had just broken up. When Patrick O'Connor left Hattiesburg for Atlanta, Darren jumped in to fill the spot.
With a new drummer keeping the beats, Atomic Jefferson started to move forward again. They hooked up with Oxford, MS's the Cooters and started playing shows that set the glue for a very powerful foursome. They went to Oxford recording studio, Zombie Birdhouse, and cut two new tracks, Flowers and Peckerwood. Only the original balls to the wall version of Peckerwood has been released. You can find it on the Molasses Grave compilation, Best of Bumf--- Egypt.
However the new drummer and his old bandmate wanted to move the band in different directions. Some old wounds resurfaced and Joe decided to move on. AJ tried replacing Joe, but his shoes were just too big to fill. Finally, it was decided to have Eddie handle the vocals and Atomic Jefferson became a true power trio. There was still a long road ahead.
Some of the fans missed Joe and so did the band. Atomic Jefferson had to win over themselves as well as their public. Eventually, the rockin' live performances, occasional fights onstage, crazy antics, and ingenious songwriting won the fans over. The band soon followed.
With new confidence and a new sound, AJ did a recording session with legendary Jerry Scruggs of the August Sons. (AJ had also recorded the EP as well as the song Excedrine World with Jerry. Excedrine World was released on the Mississippi's Dreaming compilation on Fishtone Records.) These new sessions were recorded at Fake Cabin studio in Hattiesburg. With the new Scruggs sessions in the vault AJ began to raise the funds for a CD. They played and worked hard, but cash was hard to come by. Finally, Sound Unbound took out a loan and AJ went back into the studio. Only this time the studio was the Route 1 studio in Monticello, MS. Studio owner Chris Hudson convinced the band to let Jeffrey Reed man the controls, and the band recorded ten new songs. The two recording sessions were compiled and Sound Unbound, Ltd. released it as a CD. By this time it was already 1998.
Atomic Jefferson is currently working on new projects and playing concerts from Texas to Georgia.
Atomic Jefferson performances are high energy romps of swingin' rock with some surprising detours. This power trio is capable of holding their own with the best.
