In 1893, Comedian Jimmy (James Francis) Durante was born in New York City. The son of a sideshow barker, Durante was nicknamed “Schnozzola” for his bulbous nose. He started in show business at age 16 as a ragtime piano player in Bowery nightclubs and later, throughout the 1930s, he bounced between Hollywood and Broadway, gaining popularity in both stage musicals and in films. In 1906, Actor Lon Chaney, Jr. was born Creighton Chaney in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The son of actor Lon Chaney, his acting career remained unremarkable until 1940, when he dazzled critics with his role of Lennie in “Of Mice and Men.” He went on to play a number of movie monsters in addition to regular character roles.
