In 1946, In Brooklyn, a giant swarm of gnats engulfs Ebbets Field at the end of the fifth inning during the second game of a doubleheader. Due to the bothersome insects and impending darkness, the umpires call the nightcap, resulting in a 2-0 Dodger victory over the Cubs.

In 1949, “The Lone Ranger”, TV Western Drama, premiered on ABC television with Clayton Moore as the masked hero and Jay Silverheels as Tonto. Hi ho, Silver, awayyyy! Hey, Kemo Sabe, the heck with radio. Letʹs try television. Good idea, Tonto. The Lone Ranger hi-hos onto ABC.

In 1952, “Lucy in the Candy Factory” To prove a point to their spouses, Lucy (Lucille Ball, right) and Ethel (Vivian Vance) get jobs at Kramerʹs Kandy Kitchen. After failing at a number of tasks around the plant, the gals get one last chance in the wrapping department. Their mission: Make sure every bonbon that comes down the conveyor belt gets a paper cup. Miss even one and theyʹre fired. “This is easy,” says Lucy. Famous last words. And classic slapstick — the chaotic, crowning moment of “I Love Lucy.” Suddenly the conveyor belt speeds up and the chocolates are bunched closer together. Unable to keep up, Lucy and Ethel begin frantically gobbling candies, shoveling them into their chef hats, and scooping them into their blouses. The supervisor returns. Seeing everything perfectly wrapped, and oblivious to Lucy and Ethelʹs panic, she says, “Well, youʹre doing splendidly.” And then, to the conveyor operator, “Speed it up a little!”

Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor headed a memorable cast in this, the first of six seasons on the network.

In 1965, On “The Dick Van Dyke Show”, Historyʹs three best-kept secrets were the location of King Solomonʹs mines (never disclosed), the plans for D day (made manifest on June 6, 1944), and the fact that Alan Brady wore a toupee, which suddenly became common knowledge when Laura Petrie accidentally blabbed it to a national audience as a contestant on the “Pay As You Go” TV game show. Big oops. “What do you think Alan will do?” asks a quivery lipped, impeccably coiffed Laura (Mary Tyler Moore). “Itʹs not what,” replies her stammering husband and possibly soon-to-be-ex-Brady employee Rob (Dick Van Dyke), “but how.” And indeed, in the bright, witty, Emmy-winning script for “Coast-to-Coast Big Mouth” that kicked off this magical seriesʹ fifth and final season, hell hath no fury like an egomaniacal TV star whoʹs had the rug pulled out from over him. Series creator Carl Reiner, in one of his twelve appearances as Brady, is incensed and cutting, especially when addressing a desktop of heads, each sporting one of his wigs: “Fellas,” says Reiner (who revealed his own baldness in this episode), “there she is — thereʹs the little lady who put you out of business.” More than 30 years after it aired, “Big Mouth,” a caustic meditation on male vanity and office etiquette, is still one of the most precise, cohesive, and funny half hours of TV ever produced.

In 1965, “Gidget” comes to TV! SALLY FIELDʹs first starrting role, adapted from the hit movie series lasts just one year in prime time. Still, even an OSCAR winnerʹs career has to start somewhere! Trivia experts take note: THE FOUR FRESHMAN sing the TV showʹs theme.

In 1969, Johnny Cash was at #1 on the Billboard country singles chart with "A Boy Named Sue". In 1973, “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” The Twin Cities become the Sin Cities when Betty White makes her MTM debut in “The Lars Affair” as Sue Ann Nivens, the Happy Homemaker. Actually, happy home wrecker is more like it. Invited to one of Maryʹs classically disastrous parties, the ever-smiling Sue Ann offers her hostess some cleaning tips, then sweeps up Phyllisʹs never-seen dermatologist husband, Lars, and leaves the party with him. Mary and Rhoda (Valerie Harper) are baffled — Sue Ann, after all, is an unlikely seductress. In fact, sheʹs exactly the sort of woman youʹd leave for someone else. But Phyllis (Cloris Leachman) has the perfect explanation for her husbandʹs unfaithfulness: her own inexhaustible feminine allure. “Iʹve been too much of a real woman,” she declares. In the '70s, adultery was not an issue frequently handled on television, certainly not on a sitcom, but this cheating heart was served up with wit and style.

In 1989, “The Morton Downey Jr. Show”, TV Talk Show; last aired in syndication. Seems his mouth was too big for TV.

In 1990, Former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Terry Sweeneyʹs “Itʹs Still My Turn” hits bookstores. The openly gay Sweeney not only wrote the psuedo-sequel tell-all in Nancy Reaganʹs voice, the female impersonator is using it in a “one woman” Off Broadway show. “I feel my show and book are kind of like group therapy. Iʹm helping a nation of people get over the Reagans. Weʹre still you know, in Reagan fallout.”

In 2006, The Devil Rays, en route to finishing the season with 101 defeats, lose their ninetieth game for the ninth consecutive season when the team drops a 5-4 walk-off decision to the Blue Jays in ten innings at Rogers Centre. The 1936-45 Phillies are the only other team in big league history to accomplish the infamous feat. Now what influenced the original controlling owner to call this team the Devil Rays. WHo could it possibly be? Could it be….SATAN?!? Following the 2007 season, Stuart Sternberg, who had purchased controlling interest in the team from Vince Naimoli two years earlier, changed the teamʹs name from “Devil Rays” to “Rays”, now meant to primarily refer to a burst of sunshine rather than a manta ray.
