In 1866, H. G. (Herbert George) Wells, English author whose first work “The Time Machine” pioneered science fiction, born. Best remembered for “War of the Worlds,” his vision of a Martian invasion of Earth.

In 1912, Animator Chuck Jones was born in Spokane, Washington. Jones grew up in Hollywood, where he observed Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton while working as a child extra in silent comedies.
