In 1903, Actor-ventriloquist Edgar Bergen was born in Chicago, Illinois. His early radio show, “The Edgar Bergen Show,” was popular with listeners who tuned in regularly to hear the antics of Bergen and his dummies, Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. He appeared, often with the duo, in films as well, including “You Canʹt Cheat an Honest Man,” “Stage Door Canteen,” “Fun and Fancy Free” and “I Remember Mama.” Bergen died on September 30, 1978; Charlie McCarthy was bequeathed to the Smithsonian Institution.
