King, Dutch (Netherlands)Misc: rules from 1689-1702; during William's life, there were two calendars in use in Europe: the Julian-Lady Day (one of the Old Styles) Julian calendar in Britain and parts of Northern and Eastern Europe, and the Gregorian (New Style) calendar in many other countries, including William's birthplace in the Netherlands. At the time of William's birth in the 17th century, Gregorian dates were ten days ahead of Julian dates: thus William was born on November 14, 1650 by Gregorian reckoning, but translated to November 4, 1650 on the Julian-Lady Day calendar. At William's death, Gregorian dates were eleven days ahead of Julian dates. He died on March 19, 1702 by the Gregorian calendar, but translated to March 8, 1702 on the Julian-1 calendar; in England, however, the New Year Day fell on March 25, so by English reckoning of the time, William died on March 8, 1701. Confusing, isn't it?
