Got a new computer? Get these for your computer! Not all of these are free. Some you have to pay for, but the ones I paid are well worth the mention.

EaseUS...(demo then pay)...data recovery, backing up, disc space management and more.

ProduKey...free...ProduKey is an essential utility for retrieving lost ProductIDs and CD-Keys for Microsoft Office, Windows and more.

Notepad++...(free)...Notepad++ is a free (as in "free speech" and also as in "free beer") source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages.

Apache OpenOffice...(free)...the free and open productivity suite.

Ultraedit...(free 30 day trial, then pay)...UltraEdit's text editing features make editing lists and columns an intuitive experience, not the exercise in tedium it used to be. With features like multi-caret editing, column/block editing and multi-select, it's a simple text editor when you want it to be, and a multi-cursor power editor when you need it to be.

Total Commander...(shareware, then pay if you like it)...Total Commander a Shareware file manager for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista/7/8/8.1/10, and Windows® 3.1.

Filezilla...(free)...the free FTP solution....FileZilla is a cross-platform graphical FTP, SFTP, and FTPS file management tool for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and more. With tons of intuitive tools, FileZilla helps you quickly move files between your computer and Web server.

PowerBasic...(pay)...Do you write BASIC programs for your Windows computer? Still using QBASIC? Rewrite them with PowerBasic with far more advanced features since DOS came out in the 1980s! Well worth the price. I own a copy.

Forte Agent...(shareware for free, pro version for pay)...Still using USENET? This newsreader has advanced features.

Winamp...(free)...mp3 is the streaming standard and this Winamp has been discontinued several years ago. The download of the last one is still available.

VLC media player...(free)...VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. Do you have Windows 8.0 and above? You need this.

The Opera web browser....(free)...Replace Internet Explorer and Windows Edge with this less risky browser.

Mozille Firefox....(free)...Another web browser replacement for IE and Edge.

MP3TAG....(donateware...pay if you like it)...The universal tag editor and more. Mp3tag is a powerful and easy-to-use tool to edit metadata of audio files.

Audacity Audio Editor....(free)...Audacity is a free, open source, cross-platform software for recording and editing sounds.

Corel Paint Shop Pro...(pay, trial version might be available)...IMHO it's simply the best photo editor. Buy this software on discs and when you get a new computer, take them there.

MailWasher Pro...(shareware and pay versions)...This is an anti-spam filter for incoming POP e-mail. Delete the spam before you download the e-mails you want. If you use e-mail in a web browser, you might not need this.
