In 1990, At 23, Meldrick Taylor, a veteran of Philadelphiaʹs fabled gym wars and the reigning IBF junior-welterweight champion, was regarded by many as, pound for pound, the greatest fighter in the world. On this night at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas, he was toe-to-toe with Mexican legend Julio Cé sar Chá vez, the WBC junior-welterweight champion. And Taylor was beating the stuffing out of him. By the final round, Taylor was comfortably ahead on two of the three judgesʹ scorecards. Then a surgical Chá vez combination sent Taylor crashing to the canvas. The indicator lights in each of the four corners were flashing, alerting everyone that there were less than ten seconds left in the bout. As Taylor scrambled to his feet, referee Richard Steele issued the mandatory eight-count and then stopped the fight — with two seconds left — giving Chá vez the TKO. “I saw a beaten fighter,” said Steele afterward. Thereʹs no telling how the judges would have ruled, of course, but because of a controversial refereeʹs decision — and a ferocious opponent — Taylor never got to find out.
