In 2000, Britney Spearsʹ album “Oops…I Did It Again” was released and set a one-week sales record for a female artist with 1.3 million copies, according to Soundscan. Spearsʹ “Oops!” is the second fastest-selling album ever. ʹN Snycʹs “No Strings Attached” set a sales record of 2.4 million copies in its first week on the market earlier that spring.

In 2000, Forget the symbol, erase the acronym. The artist formerly known as Prince announced that he will be, now and forever, known again as Prince. “On December 31, 1999, my publishing contract with Warner-Chappell expired, thus emancipating the name I was given before birth — Prince — from all long-term restrictive documents,” the freshly-minted Prince told a crowded news conference. “I will now go back to using my name instead of the symbol I adopted to free myself from all undesirable relationships.”
