In 2000, This isnʹt childʹs play. Sonyʹs PlayStation2 video game console went on sale at midnight in North America, and hard-core gamers or their deep-pocketed parents lined up to buy it at $299 each. PlayStation2 signals a new generation of consoles, where consumers can eventually play DVD movies, download music, play games with their friends in another city, and do some surfing — all through their TV sets. When it came to getting your hands on a Sony PlayStation2, it didnʹt pay to be polite. With the company already acknowledging it canʹt meet demand because of parts shortages, consumers resorted to whatever tactics necessary to nab whatever was on the shelves when the widely-anticipated video-game console went on sale Thursday. Thousands of people, from hard-core gamers in their 20s and 30s to grandmothers looking to buy PlayStation2 for their grandchildren, went home angry — and empty-handed. Scuffles even broke out at some locations. In Minot, North Dakota, police were called to a Wal-Mart store after receiving reports of people threatening others waiting in line for the console. Despite the shortfall in initial shipments, Sony says it expects to meet its goal of delivering ten million units worldwide by March 2001, of which three million are slated for North America.

Ironically, Cosby had twice refused the honor, complaining about the use of profanity at the inaugural ceremony in 1998 honoring Richard Pryor.
