In 1913, The famous Palace Theatre first opened its doors in New York City on this day. Ed Wynn was first on the vaudeville bill. Some 20 years later, Wynn would be named as radioʹs top entertainer. He later became popular on television, as well.

In 1943, Jimmy Durante and Garry Moore premiered on network radio this day. The pair replaced the popular “Abbott and Costello” following Lou Costelloʹs heart attack. Durante and Moore stayed on the air for four years. Moore would later make a beat to television with “The Gary Moore Show” and “To Tell The Truth” both on CBS. Durante would also become a TV star on ABC with “The Jimmy Durante Show” in addition to nightclub appearances, movies and records.

In 1954, RCA announced it had begun producing color television sets at its plant in Bloomington, Indiana. The sets, with 12½-inch picture tubes, were expected to cost $1,000 each. Westinghouse introduced more expensive sets earlier in the month.

In 1967, R.C., “The Return Of The Red Baron” by The Royal Guardsmen peaked at #15 on the pop singles chart.

In 1968, 58 was enough as the final episode of “The Monkees” TV show aired on NBC. The group disbands in 1969 and re-forms in 1986 without Michael Nesmith. The final original episode, titled “MIJACOGEO (THE FRODIS CAPER)” closes with a guest singing appearance by TIM HARDIN (“THE UNIVERSAL SOLDIER”)

On March 24, David Letterman mentioned a commercial he heard on the radio about British Airways airfare deals to European cities and how, for prices like $199 round trip, there must be a catch. In 2000, Will Smithʹs staring turn in “Wild Wild West” won him a few not-so-glamorous nods from the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation, a group which annually selects the yearʹs worst films, actors and songs. The 20th Annual Razzie Awards were announced in Beverly Hills, California, with Smith and his “West” co-star, Kevin Kline, taking home a Razzie for Worst On-screen Couple of 1999. Smith also shared a Razzie for Worst “Original” Song with Stevie Wonder and Kool Moe Dee for the title track to the Barry Sonnenfeld directed western. The film also received Razzies for Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay of 1999, while Sonnenfeld was named Worst Director.
