In 1582, (October 14 on the Proleptic Gregorian Calendar), this is Gregorian Calendar Adjustment Day; Pope Gregory XIII issued a decree that the day following today should be next day became October 15; this corrected the problem with the previously-used Julian calendar which was ten days behind because of the extra leap year days. In 1949, “The Life Of Riley”, TV Comedy, on radio since '44; skip '51-52; debut on NBC. NBC brings William Bendixʹs popular radio series to the small screen. Bendix, however, is unable to do the series, and the role of bumbling Chester A. Riley goes to none other than Jackie Gleason. Amazingly, Gleason doesnʹt click with viewers, so the show goes on hiatus — for three years — and returns with Bendix and a new cast.

In 1952, “Ladies and gentlemen, the program you are about to see is true, only the jokes have been changed to protect the station…KNXT, in cooperation with the Itinerant Yam Pickers of southern California, cautiously presents…Carsonʹs Cellar,” a half-hour low-budget sketch comedy show, which soon leads to a writing job for young Johnny Carson on the Red Skelton show.

In 1954, “December Bride”, TV Comedy; debut on CBS. Comedienne Spring Byington began the successful network TV series. The show had started on radio in 1952 before making the switch to black and white TV.

In 1955, TV Guide Listing: 8 p.m./ET “The Bob Hope Show” (NBC): Glamorous Jane Russell and Janis (“Itʹs Always Jan”) Paige join Robert Hope on his first show of the new season. Jane is seen on film presiding over the crowning of 12 debs presented at the makeup artistsʹ and hairstylistsʹ ball last Friday. Janis Paige appears in a honeymoon comedy sketch with Bob, and is featured in a solo production number. A film segment from a show of last season presents Roy Rogersʹ horse Trigger and Bob Hope in a comic sequence entitled “The Bareback Contessa.”

In 1957, Theodore Cleaver is sent home with a note from his teacher, and convinced by his school mates that itʹs probably a threatened suspension, he conspires with brother Wally to hide the note to avoid being beaten by his father on the debut of “Leave It to Beaver.” The unopened note was actually a request for him to play Smokey Bear in a school pageant, and the teacher wonders the next day why a return note from the “Beaverʹs Parents” says he was “suitably punished for his actions”

In 1976, Remember Earl Butz? He was agriculture secretary under President Jimmy Carter. It was on this date that Butz resigned after apologizing for what he called the “gross indiscretion” of uttering a racist remark. The comment became fodder for many comedians.

In 1992, Singer Sinead (shuh-NAYDʹ) OʹConnor ripped up a picture of the pope during an after-midnight appearance on “Saturday Night Live.” NBCʹs switchboard in New York was flooded with calls, most of them criticizing OʹConnorʹs actions.

In 1994, “Frasier” deftly using assumptions about sexuality as grist for farce as “The Matchmaker” details a mixed-up first date. Hoping to fix up Daphne (Jane Leeves), Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) invites his station manager, Tom (Eric Lutes), to dinner, unaware heʹs gay. During the meal, delicately used pronouns fuel Tomʹs misconception that heʹs dating Frasier, who misreads Tomʹs interest for an attraction to Daphne.
