In 1908, The baseball song, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” was popularized by singer Billy Murray. The words were written by Jack Norworth, with music by Albert Von Tilzer. Neither man ever saw a game. In 1989, James Mote, in his book Everything Baseball, listed 67 recordings of the song. On one of the 2016 World Series games, Bill Murray (no relation?) sung that same song during a seventh-inning stretch, and yes, that Murray was at a baseball stadium.

In 1930, J. P. (Jiles Perry) Richardson was born. Better known as The Big Bopper, he wrote the song “Running Bear” and had a huge hit as a singer with “Chantilly Lace.” He was killed in the chartered plane crash on February 3, 1959 that also killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the pilot of the plane.

He (like all of the other visitors to the island) leaves without sending help.

In 1969, In a Brady Bunch episode called “Katchoo”, Jan develops an allergy, possibly to one of the Bradys, Carol keeps daughter Jan from school, believing she has a cold. But when the sneezing continues, it is believed that Jan is allergic to her new father or Tiger, the dog.

In 1970, R.C., “Lola” by The Kinks peaked at number nine on the pop singles chart; it was parodied by “Weird Al” into “Yoda” in the 1980s.

In 1970, Writers James L. Brooks and Allan Burns unleash Nancy Walker as Rhodaʹs mother, Ida Morgenstern on “Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Itʹs a smart move that earns the show one of its first Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing Achievement. Ida: “I never eat, I just nibble.” Mary: “Well, if youʹre still hungry, thereʹs half a chicken in the refrigerator.” Ida: “Not anymore, thatʹs what I nibbled.”

In 1975, Looking to name your own greatest hits album something other than “Greatest Hits”? Do what former Beatle, John Lennon did this day, with his package of the best. Lennon called it, “Shaved Fish”.

In 1975, “Fawlty Towers.” One of the rock-ribbed rules of American programming is: “Nobody wants to watch a show about someone who isnʹt likable.” (This is sometimes called the Dabney Coleman rule, after the actor who has had a few critically acclaimed but low-rated sitcoms about less-than-admirable characters.) Thus it falls to the British to give us an “Absolutely Fabulous” or a “Fawlty Towers”. Basil Fawlty — the English innkeeper cocreated and portrayed by Monty Python alumnus John Cleese in 1975 (the U.S. debut came in 1980) — is definitely not likable. He is, in fact, sly, sarcastic, suspicious, rude, raging, and resentful, particularly of his wife, Sybil (Prunella Scales). When Sybil starts a three-day hospital stay for an ingrown toenail — coinciding with the arrival of German guests — Fawltyʹs faults run riot in an achingly funny episode. “The Germans,” which includes a talking moose head and a fire that breaks out during a fire drill, climaxes when Basil gets a concussion and cannot follow his own urgent advice to the innʹs staff about their new guests: “Donʹt mention the war!” Not only does the befogged Fawlty mention it, but he launches into a hysterical Hitler impression; and the unforgettable sight of the six foot, five inch Cleese goose-stepping through Fawlty Towers and shrieking in mock German puts “The Germans” high in our pantheon.

In 1980, “The David Letterman Show”, TV Talk Show; last aired on NBC daytime. It won Emmys the following May and returned on NBCʹs late night sked in February 1982.

In 1989, Actress Zsa Zsa Gabor was sentenced to 72 hours in jail for slapping a Beverly Hills police officer. She also was ordered to perform 120 hours of community service at a womenʹs shelter.

In 1990, In The Simpsonsʹ episode “TREE HOUSE OF HORROR”, The weekly brilliance of The Simpsons often takes on an added sheen when the writers turn the family loose in familiar pop-culture vehicles — as we saw here, when Homer and Company stumbled into scary-movie spoofs of “Psycho”, and “Fall of the House of Usher” and even a “Twilight Zone” episode. The first section of this three-part show finds the Simpsons attempting to stay in their new, haunted house overnight, despite blood dripping down the walls. The second sees them abducted by aliens, whose generous catering convinces Lisa that the family is being fattened up for an E.T. feast. The final chapter brings us Lisa reading Edgar Allan Poeʹs horror classic “The Raven” in the tree house while Homer listens, terrified, in the yard. The trick-or-treat conceit worked so well that it has become a Simpsons tradition.

In 1991, In The Simpsonsʹ episode “LIKE FATHER LIKE CLOWN”, Krusty the Clown a Hasidic Jew? The concept has “oy vey” written all over it — unless, of course, you factor in the satirically gifted Simpsons writers. With a nod to “The Jazz Singer,” Krusty reveals to the Simpsons a painful secret: His father, Rabbi Krustofski, disowned him for choosing pies in the face over piety. Flashing back to kiddie Krustyʹs shtetl-like surroundings and early entertaining impulses wouldʹve been enough; but Bart and Lisaʹs attempt to crack the Rabbiʹs hardened heart with Talmudic teachings made it the most learned half hour of humor in history. For added authenticity, the role of Rabbi Krustofski was played by Jackie Mason, who could relate: Like Krusty, he came from a long line of rabbis, and like Krusty, he would rather be clowning.

In 1991, “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry died in Santa Monica, California, at age 70.

In 2003, The movie “Scary Movie 3” opened in movie theaters in the U.S.A.

In 2011, “Monster In-Laws” began airing on A&E

In 2014, Actress Marcia Strassman, whoʹd played Gabe Kaplanʹs wife, Julie, on the 1970s sitcom “Welcome Back, Kotter,” died in Sherman Oaks, California, at age 66.

In 2017, “The Jokerʹs Wild” returned to be airing new episodes on TBS.

In 2019, The body of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco was exhumed from the Valley of the Fallen in San Lorenzo de El Escorial to be moved to Mingorrubio-El Pardo. Sources tell us that there were medical examiners checking for vital signs to see if he was still dead!

In 2022, Actor Leslie Jordan, a comedy and drama standout on TV series including “Will and Grace” and “American Horror Story,” died at age 67.
