In 1917, Born on this day in Rosewood, Kentucky was Merle Travis. The American country and Western singer, songwriter known for his hit "Sixteen Tons". Travis' guitar style became known as "Travis picking", and his songs often discussed the life and exploitation of coal miners in the lyrics. Travis who was was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970 and elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1977 died on October 20, 1983.

In 1917, Guitarist-songwriter Merle Travis was born in Rosewood, Kentucky. Travisʹs father, a tobacco farmer, often finished the dayʹs work by remarking, “Another day older and deeper in debt” — a phrase his son would use in the smash hit single by Tennessee Ernie Ford, “Sixteen Tons.” Travis garnered some success with such memorable songs as “No Vacancy,” “Cincinnati Lou,” “Information Please” and “Divorce Me C.O.D.,” and he co-wrote Capitol Recordʹs first million-seller, “Smoke, Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette” with Tex Williams, who recorded it. However it was “Sixteen Tons,” from Travisʹs “Folk Songs of Our Hills” collection, that he is perhaps best remembered for, and the hit song won a gold record for singer Ford in 1955. Prior to that, in 1953, Travis also landed a fairly visible movie role in the box-office hit “From Here to Eternity,” in which he played a soldier and performed the song “Re-Enlistment Blues.” On October 20, 1983, Travis died after suffering a massive heart attack the day before; he was 65.
