In 2000, In his last daily “Peanuts” comic strip after a 50-year career, Charles M. Schulz bids a fond farewell to the millions of fans who have made Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the rest of the gang among the most beloved cartoon figures in the world. The cartoon, depicting Snoopy pondering the typewriter atop his doghouse, was published like this: “I have been fortunate to draw Charlie Brown and his friends for almost 50 years. It has been the fulfillment of my childhood ambition,” Schulz writes in his farewell note, which takes up the entire panel. Schulz, 77, announced last month that he would stop drawing “Peanuts” this year in order to concentrate on treating a newly-diagnosed case of colon cancer. The cartoon, which first appeared on October 2, 1950, is now published in more than 2,600 newspapers around the world, reaching 355 million readers in 75 countries and 21 languages. Schultz died in February 2000.

He raises the cartoon to high art; brings psychology, philosophy and theology into the comics; changes pop culture forever, gives the world characters as allegorical as Shakespeareʹs…” “I hope this has a happy ending!” Snoopy then thinks, his mouth a worried squiggle. Similarly poignant farewells have come from all corners of the globe for Schulz, 77, who is undergoing chemotherapy for colon cancer diagnosed in November. He alone wrote, drew, colored and lettered “Peanuts” for nearly 50 years.
