In 2024, The copyright on Mickey Mouse (or actually, just the 1928 cartoon short "Steamboat Willie") is scheduled to expire, which “means Mickey will become public property — and the Walt Disney Company will lose one of its most valuable assets,” notes the New York Observer. “Copyrights on other major Disney characters, including Donald Duck and Goofy, will expire a few years later.” It was to expire 20 years before in 2004, but the Copyright Term Extension Act extended copyright terms in the United States in the year 1998 so that copyright protection was increased to 95 years from their publication date.
