In 1894, The Library of Congress issued the first copyright to W.K. Dickson for one of the earliest motion picture experiments to Thomas Edison for a movie of a man named Fred Ott sneezing. Edison shot the film in 1891 at the Thomas Edison studio in West Orange, New Jersey. Gesundheit!

In 1912, Cartoonist Charles Addams was born in Westfield, New Jersey. While in high school he started drawing and submitting cartoons for publication; his dream was to work at The New Yorker magazine, which came true full-time in 1940. He continued with the magazine up until his death, drawing over 1,300 cartoons. His most famous creation was that of the spooky Addams Family, a morbidly strange family of characters that were later featured in the 1960s TV series by the same name starring John Astin and Carolyn Jones; several motion pictures were also released in the 1990s based on the macabre family. Addams died of heart failure on September 28, 1988.
