In 1904, Actor Ray Bolger was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts. A former bank clerk, accountant and vacuum-cleaner salesman, Bolger made his professional debut in 1922 in a musical-comedy repertory company. After several Broadway appearances, he made his screen debut in 1936's “The Great Ziegfeld.” His subsequent films include “Rosalie,” “Sweethearts,” “Four Jacks and a Jill,” “Stage Door Canteen,” “The Harvey Girls,” “April in Paris,” “Babes in Toyland,” “The Entertainer” and “The Runner Stumbles,” but he is perhaps best remembered by millions of fans as the understuffed scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz” and in the lead role of “Whereʹs Charley?”, a musical version of “Charleyʹs Aunt,” in which Bolger had also starred in a long-running Broadway production. He died on January 15, 1987.

In 1949, The Radio Corporation of America, sometimes known as RCA, announced (not to be confused with going on sale, which was on a later date whenever that is) a new seven-inch, 45 rpm phonograph record to compete with the 78 rpm records. Soon, the 45, the record with the big hole in the middle, would change the pop music business. RCA even manufactured a record player that played only 45s — with a fat spindle that made “stacking wax” real simple and automatic for those romantic times when hands were just too busy to be flippin' records.

In 1960, Marty Robbins hit tune, “El Paso”, held the record for the longest number one song up to this date. The song ran five minutes and 19 seconds, giving many radio station Program Directors fits; because the average record length at that time was around two minutes, and formats didnʹt allow for records much longer than that, (e.g., two-minute record, three minutes for commercials, 60 seconds for promo, two-minute record, etc.) DJʹs got used to the longer length quickly, however, realizing it gave them time, before the record ended, to actually think of something to say next…

In 1964, The U.S. version of “That Was The Week That Was” (TW3) began airing on NBC-TV as a half-hour satirical revue broadcast live from New York after a successful hour-long special on November 10, 1963. The show, based on the BBC program of the same name, ran through May the fourth, 1965. It was revived as a one-time ABC special in 1985, and as a segment on ABCʹs Primetime Live ca. 2004–05. It starred Henry Morgan, Margaret Hamilton, Nancy Ames (the “TW3” girl), a roving report from “special correspondent” William Conrad (who commuted between this and the BBC version) and Berlin Wall hand ballet. Tom Lehrer, who filled an entire album with his contributions to the show, wonʹt appear until June. Lehrer joked in one of this songs by amending the title as “That Was The Week That Was That Would Have Been.”
