In 1925, Entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. was born in New York City. His biggest hit was “Candy Man,” a million-selling number one song that was featured in the 1972 film “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” A member of the Sinatra “Rat Pack,” Davis also starred in such films as “Porgy and Bess,” “Oceanʹs 11,” “Robin and the Seven Hoods” and “Sweet Charity.” He also made a memorable guest appearance on TVʹs “All in the Family” and wrote an autobiography, “Why Me?” Davis died on May 16, 1990.
In 1933, Comedian Flip (Clerow) Wilson was born. He starred on his own TV show, “The Flip Wilson Show,” as well as nabbed an Emmy Award for his writing on the series. Wilson also released comedy albums and starred in films, such as “Uptown Saturday Night.” His sassy female drag character, Geraldine, sparked a national catchphrase: “The DEVIL made me do it!” Wilson died on November 25, 1998.
In 1940, George Halasʹs Chicago Bears, with additional coaching by Clark Shaughnessy of Stanford, defeated the Washington Redskins 73-0, the most lopsided in history, in the NFL Championship Game. The game, which was the most decisive victory in NFL history, popularized the Bearsʹ T-formation with a man-in-motion. It was the first championship carried on network radio, broadcast by Red Barber to 120 stations of the Mutual Broadcasting System, which paid $2,500 for the rights.
