Related Events on This Date

In 1851, The first American Young Menʹs Christian Association was organized, in Boston, Massachusetts, 127 years before The Village People sang the praises for it. You can hang out with all the boys!

In 1945, Sheb Wooley recorded the first commercial record made in Nashville, Tennessee. The song was recorded on the Bullet label; but it was 13 years before Wooley would finally score with a big hit (“The Purple People Eater” was number one for six weeks in June and July, 1958). Wooley (whose first name is Shelby) played the part of Pete Nolan on TVʹs “Rawhide”, recorded novelty tunes under the name, Ben Colder and acted in “High Noon”, “Rocky Mountain”, “Giant” and “Hoosiers”. The Country Music Association honored him with the title of Comedian of the Year in 1968. If you remember the TV show “Hee Haw”, with Buck Owens and Roy Clark, it was Sheb Wooley who wrote the theme song.

In 1949, KC2XAK of Bridgeport, Connecticut became the first ultrahigh frequency (UHF) television station to begin operating on a regular daily schedule. UHF stations broadcast from where the VHF (very high frequency) stations leave off — channels 14 through 83. Weird Al Yankovic starred in a movie 40 years later about a UHF station. We got it all on UHF!

In 1950, “Tom Corbett: Space Cadet”, TV Scifi Adventure; last aired on CBS, moved to ABC.

In 1956, R.C., “The Auctioneer” by Chuck Miller peaked at #59 on the pop singles chart.

In 1958, R.C., “Donde Esta Santa Claus? (Where Is Santa Claus?)” by Augie Rios peaked at #47 on the pop singles chart.

In 1958, R.C., “Green Christmas” by Stan Freberg peaked at #44 on the pop singles chart.

In 1962, R.C., “Monsterʹs Holiday” by Bobby “Boris” Pickett peaked at #30 on the pop singles chart.

In 1962, R.C., “Rudolph, The Red Nosed Reindeer” by The Chipmunks reentered the chart and peaked at #77 on the pop singles chart.

In 1962, R.C., “Samʹs Song” by Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. peaked at #94 on the pop singles chart.

In 1962, R.C., “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” by The Four Seasons peaked at #23 on the pop singles chart.

In 1967, (or for the really picky, Stardate 4523.3), Star Trekʹs whimsical episode “The Trouble With Tribbles” aired on NBC. And from Spockʹs observations, theyʹre bisexual, reproducing at will. (Get it? Whimsical Tribbles at Will? Whimsical Will?) The starship Enterprise answers a subspace distress call from Space Station K7, and winds up ferrying a couple of tons of wheat, which soon are eaten by “only the sweetest creature known to man.” This episode was recently voted the favorite episode of that series by its fans.

In 1973, “Spiders and Snakes” by Jim Stafford entered the Top 40 chart.

In 1974, Today in Days of Our Lives History: Hope Williams Brady (b. 1974 on Days, but celebrated her 18th birthday in 1983 due to a soap opera disease called Rapid Aging Syndrome) Hopeʹs tombstone says her birthday is December 24, but the Days prop people made a mistake--due to low production budgets, theyʹre just too cheap to make a new one.

In 1974, “Sonny Comedy Revue”, TV Variety; last aired on ABC after bombing.

In 1975, ABC hires Regis Philbin to host a game show, which unfortunately does not save the network (because it had nothing to do with millionaires yet). “The Neighbors,” with five female contestants per show (all real life friends) answering questions created from gossip about one another and their private lives, only makes it to the beginning of April 1976. Definitely not a man-friendly daytime show.

In 1982, On “Late Night with David Letterman” on NBC, sends Nastassja Kinski away in tears. Kinskiʹs hair was done in a bizarre bun-like manner that Letterman described as “an owl perched on her head.” Letterman sent the show to commercial once by saying, “Weʹll be right back with the rinse and set.” Kinski also was completed loopy and somewhat oblivious to Lettermanʹs mocking, not unlike Farrah Fawcett in her recent appearance. But the clincher for this episode being an all-timer was John Candyʹs appearance (later in the show). When Letterman introduced him, Candy walked out with his short hair moussed up on end.

In 1989, “The Wallace and Ladmo Show”, also known as “Itʹs Wallace?” and “Wallace and Company” taped its final show on KPHO-TV five in Phoenix, Arizona, ending one of the longest-running, daily, locally produced childrenʹs television shows in American broadcasting history with 35 years and nearly eight months.
