Broadcast/Cable TV History - 1983

1983-00-00 On the Cox San Diego system, KCOX moved from 2 to 24 on Jan 1, then to channel 33 sometime that summer.

1983-00-00 Community Programmint Center debuted on Cox San Diego's cable 24 (KCOX used it during the daytime) and replaced CVC; CVC still aired on Southwestern Cable; no date when either of the two public access channels were dissolved sometime in the future.

1983-01-01 CNN2 was renamed CNN Headline News, then Headline News later.

1983-00-00 Genesis Storytime was launched. It was a computer graphic storybook with accompanying text that is intended to be read aloud to young children.

1983-00-00 ONTV changed its name to On Subscription TV.

1983-03-05 CMT (Country Music Television) was launched.

1983-03-07 TNN (The Nashville Network) was launched.

1983-03-31 The Entertainment Channel signed off, merged with ARTS to form A&E in 1984.

1983-04-00 Cox Cable began a Pay Per View channel featuring the San Diego Padres and movies. It didn't have a name as far as I can remember.

1983-04-11 Satcom 1R satellite was launched.

1983-04-18 Disney Channel (PAY) was launched.

1983-05-23 Channel 30 San Bernadino signed off.

1983-06-03 Night Tracks began airing on WTBS.

1983-09-08 Satcom 2R satellite was launched.

1983-10-27 SNC (Satellite News Channel) signed off.

Cable History Highlights For This Year Range

In 1983, PRISM (Philadelphia Regional In-Home Sports and Movies) joins the SportsChannel Network. This 24-hour channel provides exclusive coverage of the Philadelphia 76ers, Phillies, Flyers and first-run movie releases.

In 1983, Daytime and Cable Health networks announce a merger of their channels into one that would be launched as the Lifetime Channel on February 1 the following year.

In 1983, The “Terry Fox Story”, the first made-for-cable film is shown on HBO, which triggers a plethora of high quality movies. Showtime also successfully revives “The Paper Chase,” a legal-based drama series dropped by the broadcast networks.

In 1983, Rainbow launches SportsChannel New England (now FOX Sports Net New England) in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. SportsChannel New England offers awardwinning coverage of the Boston Celtics and Hartford Whalers.
