1985-00-00 Video Jukebox Network was launched.

1985-00-00 A pay-per-view service, Viewer's Choice, began operations.

1985-01-00 Channel 30 San Bernadino relaunch, month known, day unknown.

1985-01-01 A&E moved to on own 24-hour channel after years of sharing transponder space with Nickelodeon.

1985-01-01 VH1 (Video Hits 1) was launched.

1985-02-01 The Nostalgia Channel was launched. (or January 1, 1986?) The channel featured vintage movies.

1985-05-31 ON Subscription TV signed off at the end of this broadcast night. On and SelecTV merged.

1985-06-01 ON/SelecTV aired on both 22 and 52/57 for the summer.

1985-06-17 The Discovery Channel was launched.

1985-07-01 Nick at Nite launched, shared with Nickelodeon 8pm-6am ET. Some sources give June 1 or 7, 1985.

1985-07-01 HSC was renamed as HSN (Home Shopping Network).

1985-08-17 Channel 63 Oxnard signed on.

1985-09-00 Channel 52's (57 in San Diego) normal programming returned with Spanish language programming with the end of ON/SelecTV; SelecTV continued on KWHY 22.

1985-10-19 Prime Ticket was launched from Los Angeles as a regional sports network.

1985-11-00 Request TV (PPV) was launched.

1985-11-27 Satcom K2 satellite was launched.

Cable History Highlights For This Year Range

In 1985, The National Cable Television Center and Museum is established at Pennsylvania State University by the Cable TV Pioneers in association with the NCTA, CATA and state and regional cable associations.

In 1985, The U.S. Court of Appeals strikes down FCC rules requiring cable operators to carry all local broadcast signals. The court holds the rules violate cable's First Amendment rights. (Quincy Cable Television v. FCC)
