Spring 1999: NBC Cancels Long Running Soap

In the spring of 1999, NBC contemplated on which of the two of three soaps it needed to cancel (it just renewed DAYS in 1998) in order to make room for a new soap, Passions. After a long hard thought, it decided to cancel Another World, which would air its final episode on June 25, 1999.

On this week, NBC aired the Wimbledon tournament, pre-empting most of its programming.

1999/09/06-Changes

On this date, NBC drops the 11 ET, 10 CT/PT hour when it cancels "Leeza" and gives the slot to local affiliates. In the 9am ET hour (possibly 9am in other time zones as well), NBC takes the slot and inserts "Later Today" there, but a year later, it turned into a third hour of "Today." NBC's non-Today daytime hours was down to three.

Late in the year, due to low ratings, NBC cancels "Sunset Beach" and gives its time slot to local affiliates, and on the week after, January 3, 2000, NBC's daytime schedule would be down to two hours, not including any of the three hours of Today.

There were now 13 network daytime shows left on the schedule between NBC, CBS and ABC.

On this date, UPN re-enters the weekday daytime business with a two hour morning block of kid's shows with a deal with The Walt Disney Company to bring the viewers Disney's One Two, which was basically the syndicated The Disney Afternoon block moving to UPN.

Also, The WB moved its morning shows ahead a half hour to start at 7am ET.

This week would have the most hours per day devoted to weekday network children's progamming with Fox with three hours (cutting back to two and a half hours the following week), The WB with three hours, and UPN with two hours, making the total eight hours a day.

Also note that UPN affiliates might air the Disney's One Too programming in a late afternoon slot.

In markets where there are no affiliates of UPN or WB, Fox and other independent stations might take the Kids' WB and UPN Disney programming and schedule some where they can. Example: KSWB in San Diego (a WB affiliate) aired UPN Disney's One Too Programming in some of the available time slots in the morning or afternoon until almost a year or two after XHUPN signed on as the second UPN affiliate. KUSI, a charter UPN affiliate of 1995, dropped the UPN network programming in 1998 for reasons of subpar programming quality.

In markets where Fox owned a second TV station in the same market, they had the option to place the Fox Kids programming on a sister station while programming aimed at adults aired in its place.

On this date, Fox shrunk its Fox Kids AM schedule to 30 minutes and aired "The Magic School Bus" there. Affiliates might air it at 7am or other times, even on other days.

NBC cancels Sunset Beach and would have its final airing on December 31, 1999. The hour for the soap would be returned to local TV stations.
