According to a post in USENET, did you know that Eight Is Enough was based on the autobiography of Washington Columnist (and former Crossfire co-host) Tom Braden? Another one answered that he wrote an autobiography entitled Eight Is Enough and I guess some TV exec thought it would make a good show. I always knew that the show was based (loosely) on someone's real life, but I didn't know whose until a few years ago when I read that it was indeed Tom Braden, Pat Buchanen's (and later Robert Novak's) sparring partner on Crossfire, circa 1986/87.
