Originally a serious dance student at the La Guardia High School of the Arts, Shavers decided on acting when her grandfather, an opera singer, took her to see the play, "Annie." In February, 1997, with only $2,000 in her pocket and an overwhelming desire to act, she left Spanish Harlem for California. Soon she landed guest-starring roles on "Felicity," "Beverly Hills, 90210" and "New York Undercover."
Shavers' heritage is Afro-Caribbean -- Dominican and West Indian on her mother's side, Panamanian and French on her father's side. Her father named her China, pronounced "Cheena," because his favorite aunt was Chinese.
Her mother is an artist, and China inherited a love of art. Her favorite artist is Degas, known for his portraits of dancers. She also collects antiques and loves to dance the merengue. "To relax," she says, she recently took up skydiving.
