He worked with the Windy City's famed Second City comedy troupe from 1974-1980.
His first significant television appearance was on Soap in 1981, and other TV credits included Taxi and M*A*S*H.
He is best known for playing Norm Peterson on the hit televison series, "Cheers". He played Norm at least once on five other series: "St. Elsewhere", "The Tortellis", "The Simpsons", "Wings", and "Frasier".
Along with Ted Danson and Rhea Perlman, he is one of only three actors to appear in all 273 episodes of "Cheers"
In the early 1990s, Wendt made cameo appearances on several episodes of Saturday Night Live as Bob Swerski, one of the Chicago Superfans (along with castmembers Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Robert Smigel, and one-time host, Joe Mantegna).
After Cheers, in 1995, CBS gave him his own sitcom, The George Wendt Show, but it didn't have the ratings and was dropped after one season. Like many of the original Cheers cast members, Wendt reprised his Cheers character on Frasier, and also appeared on Becker with Ted Danson.
He appeared in several episodes of Sabrina, The Teenage Witch as the title character's boss. He also was the host of the A&E reality show, House of Dreams in 2004. In January 2006, Wendt was seen again on television screens as part of the cast of Modern Men.
He is married to actress Bernadette Birkett, who provided the rare offscreen voice of Norm's unseen wife Vera.
The couple have two sons and a daughter. They met while working at the Second City in Chicago.
