1980 Daytime Schedules-Central Time Zone Edition

One of the Sources: The Daytime TV Archive: 1980 (as Eastern Times only)

Due to CBS alterting its schedule on February 4, 1980, and ABC still having a slightly altered schedule at this time until June 30, we're presenting separate pages for the Eastern, Central and Pacific time zone feeds for 1980.

1980/01/14-Central

In the first daytime network change of the decade, NBC replaces "Mindreaders" with "Chain Reaction" hosted by Bill Cullen in the noon ET, 11 CT/PT slot. That lasted just over five months.

1980/02/04-Central

In a major series of moves and changes, all on CBS, the network dropped "The All New Beat The Clock" and replaced it with reruns of "The Jeffersons" at 10 ET, 9 CT/PT.

In another major network move related to soap operas, CBS makes a bold move to move the half-hour local window to 12 ET, but at the same time, have a half-hour local window at 12 CT/PT as well. How? Here's what they did.

With CBS beginning to feel a lot of heat from NBC and ABC with their soap opera expansions into the 1pm ET, 12 CT/PT hour, making "As the World Turns" at 1:30 ET, 12:30 CT/PT suffer, CBS decided to expand "The Young and the Restless" to one hour and place it at the 1 ET, 12 CT/PT slot. In exchange, CBS moved the half-hour local window to 12 ET, 11 CT/PT. It moved "As the World Turns" to 2 ET, 1 CT/PT, "Guiding Light" to 3 ET, 2 CT/PT, and "One Day at a Time" to 4 ET, 3 CT/PT.

CBS canceled "Love of Life", which was slotted in the network's death slot.

But wait! What about the TV stations in the Central and Pacific time zones having a local window at 12? What happened to that? Well, with the help of leasing satellite space, CBS pre-fed "Restless" in advance for stations to run in an earlier time slot if they wish. In the case of the Central and Pacific time zones, they could run "Restless" at 11 CT/PT, followed by the local news at 12 CT/PT. At 11:30 CT/PT, the CBS stations taped "Search for Tomorrow" while airing "Restless", then played the soap at 12:30 CT/PT. Stations could still move their local news to 11 CT/PT and use the live CBS feed where "Search" aired at 11:30 and "Restless" aired at 12.

Noted that with this move and options, "Search" aired at 12:30pm ET/CT/PT, an oddity in network daytime scheduling. On the CT and PT, it was preceeded by the combo of "Restless" and local news depending on the city, but on the ET, "Restless" followed "Search", with the news at NOON ET preceding it.

Here's what the three CBS shows with a local news timeslot looked like:
a. Eastern-Live: 12pm Local; 12:30pm Search for Tomorrow; 1pm The Young and the Restless; 2pm As the World Turns
b. Central/Pacific-Live: 11am Local; 11:30am Search for Tomorrow; 12pm The Young and the Restless; 1pm As the World Turns
c. Central/Pacific-Alt: 11am The Young and the Restless, 12pm Local; 12:30pm Search for Tomorrow; 1pm As the World Turns

The schedules you see for the Central and Pacific time zones reflect the alternative optional times with the live feed times listed for each of the three shows.

1980/06/23-Eastern

On this day, NBC adds a second 90-minute show to its daytime schedule, one that would prove to be better for late night than in daytime: "The David Letterman Show" in the 10-11:30 ET, 9-10:30 CT/PT slot. To make room for it, NBC cancels "High Rollers", "Chain Reaction", and "Hollywood Squares", and moves "Card Sharks" to the 12 ET, 11 CT/PT slot.
"Letterman" is produced in two parts: the first 60 minutes (exactly), followed by the final 30 minutes (exactly) for affiliates such as KCST in San Diego who carried syndicated programming instead of the first 60 minutes of the show.

On the ABC Pacific feed, "Boat" occupied the 10-11 PT slot, taking over "Laverne and Shirley" and "Pyramid"'s hour, but "Feud" stayed at 11 PT.

As of today, the ABC Pacific time zone feed matches the Central time zone slotting.

In another scheduling change, NBC contracted "Letterman" to an hour from 10-11am ET, 9-10am CT/PT. It moved "Wheel" to 11 ET, 10 CT/PT, "Password" to 11:30 ET, 10:30 CT/PT and "The Doctors" to 12:30 ET, 11:30 CT/PT. This was so that NBC could premiere an hour-long soap "Texas" at 3 ET, 2 CT/PT. It shrunk "Another World" to 60 minutes and moved it to 2 ET, 1 CT/PT.

There were now seven half-hours where there networks competed with soaps from 12:30 ET, 11:30 CT/PT all the way to 4 ET, 3 CT/PT. The lone soap opera that didn't compete with any other soaper was "Edge of Night" at 4 ET, 3 CT/PT.

1980/10/27-Central/Pacific

On this date, "Letterman" left the NBC daytime schedule due to low ratings, but rest assured that it wouldn't be the last time you'll hear from him.

In the 10 ET, 9 CT/PT slot, NBC brought back an old CBS game show and rechristened it as "Las Vegas Gambit," followed by another new game, "Blockbusters" hosted by Bill Cullen at 10:30 ET, 9:30 CT/PT. The number of game shows went back up to seven. It would be over seven months before any network would make a schedule change.
