Mock Daytime Network TV: 1980s

In the 1980s, while ABC-TV was riding high with their daytime ratings, and CBS was making adjustments to make their schedule competitive and affiliate friendly, NBC, on the other hand, was strugging with not just prime-time, but daytime as the 1980s began.

It was announced in the first half of 1980 that NBC would debut a new weekday talk show, but in order to do that, the network would have to cancel three of its six game shows that were on, while later on, NBC was planning to spin off a new soap opera out of its 90-minute "Another World" serial (and contract that one back to 60 minutes.) The results were that NBC canceled three game shows to debut the 90 minute show "The David Letterman Show" in June, and in August, the network would take a half hour from Letterman and a half hour from Another, put them together for a one hour time slot for the short-lived spinoff, Texas.

At the beginning of 1980, ABC was dominating the 1pm/12pm time slot with "All My Children", while CBS would expand "The Young and the Restless" in February to compete better, and we were months away from the flow from "AMC" into the rising tides for the ratings for "One Life to Live" and "General Hospital," the latter of which benefited when "Texas" was slotted against it, resulting in NBC losing some of their audiences to "General" and CBS's "Guiding Light".

Meanwhile, among the non-soap programming, off-network reruns took up network real estate to plug in holes of failed game shows until new programming would be announced to replace them.

A major mistake NBC made was to plug the 1pm/12pm time slot with a network show, instead of having an open half hour slot in midday for affiliates to run lunchtime local news and other programming. This resulted in pre-emptions of several of their shows. CBS simply moved their half hour open slot ahead one hour to 12pm/11am and let their affiliates run "Restless" and "Search for Tomorrow" at alternate times, allowing their stations to run their local programming in either of the two open half hour local time slots.

ABC was doing well despite pre-emptions and delays of their 12pm/11am and 12:30pm/11:30am programs, namely, "The $20,000 Pyramid" (or "Family Feud" on the West coast) followed by "Ryan's Hope" in order for a local station to run a local half hour news show; ABC didn't have an open half hour slot, resulting in local stations that wanted to run a local news cast pre-empting or delaying the network shows, and in some cases, the network shopped the pre-empted shows to another TV station. When soaps during lunch time expanded to an hour, resulting in 60-minute serials starting at 12pm Central and Pacific, affiliates had to consider either taping the longer serials and delaying them so they can run their news at 12pm, or pre-empt a show before 12pm and place a local newscast at 11:30 Central and Pacific time.

NBC had problems with affiliates dropping shows due to news clearance reasons, low ratings, or otherwise unable to carry it due to time constraints and profitable syndicated programming since they eliminated the 1/2 hour local TV station window in 1977.

This is where we get into our Mock Daytime Network Programming schedule for NBC-TV. What if we programmed NBC Daytime in the early 1980s. What if "David Letterman" was a 60 minute show instead of a 90 minute show. What if "Texas" debuted as a half hour program instead of a full hour program. What if NBC allowed network affiliates to run "Days of Our Lives" the same day but in an earlier time slot so stations could run local news at 12pm. What if NBC didn't cancel so many game shows at once. What if NBC made a deal to carry off-network reruns of a prime-time show run on another network for a short-term to plug a hole a failed show occupied.

Let's see what it would look like....

NBC-TV 1980/01/14-Eastern Time (Real Schedule)

In the first daytime network change of the decade, NBC replaces "Mindreaders" with "Chain Reaction" hosted by Bill Cullen in the noon ET, 11 CT/PT slot. That lasted just over five months. This was their real schedule, not a mock up, which we will get to for June 1980.

am10:00-am10:30: NBC Card Sharks
am10:30-am11:00: NBC The Hollywood Squares
am11:00-am11:30: NBC The New High Rollers
am11:30-pm12:00: NBC Wheel of Fortune
pm12:00-pm12:30: NBC Chain Reaction
pm12:30-pm01:00: NBC Password Plus
pm01:00-pm02:00: NBC Days of Our Lives (S)
pm02:00-pm02:30: NBC The Doctors (S)
pm02:30-pm04:00: NBC Another World (S)
pm04:00-pm04:30: NBC Local Programming
pm04:30-pm08:00: NBC affiliate fringe programming plus NBC Nightly News

NBC-TV 1980/06/23-Eastern Time (Mock Schedule)

In this mock-up, we debut "The David Letterman Show" as a 60 minute show, rather than a 90-minute show.

NBC canceled "The Hollywood Squares", "The New High Rollers", and "Chain Reaction" to make room for it. In this mock-up, we save "The Hollywood Squares", as well as sending affiliates an advance feed for "Squares" "Card Sharks" and "Days of Our Lives", and letting affiliates run them in any time slot they want. Some Eastern time zone affiliates could run the two game shows from the advance feed from 9am to 10am, run local news at 12pm, a local show at 12:30pm, "Days" at 1pm, "The Doctors" at 2, and "Another World" from 2:30pm to 4pm.

Or, the Eastern time zone affiliates could run local from 9am to 10am, live network feed at 10am, local news at 12pm, "Card Sharks" at 12:30pm, all three soaps from 1-4pm, and "Squares" at 4pm or later.

Western time zone staitons could run most of the network live feed, but air "Days" at 11am, local news at 12pm, "Sharks" at 12:30pm, "The Doctors" at 1pm, "Another World" at 1:30pm, and "Squares" at 3pm or later.

Here is what the mock NBC schedule would look like as it would have aired live. Times are Eastern. Subtract one hour for Central and Pacific Times. "Squares" would be fed twice, so affiliates could run the show in either time slot, and run local shows at one or both slots if pre-empting "Squares".

am10:00-am11:00: NBC The David Letterman Show
am11:00-am11:30: NBC Wheel of Fortune
am11:30-pm12:00: NBC Password Plus

pm04:30-pm08:00: NBC affiliate fringe programming plus NBC Nightly News

NBC-TV 1980/08/04-Eastern Time (Mock Schedule)

On this day, "Another World" contacts its length from 90 to 60 minutes. This results in a spinoff, "Texas", premiering. What if "Texas" premiered as a 30-minute show instead of a 60-minute show. Would this "Dallas" knock-off be competetive against the other shows? Let's see what the schedule would look like then.

am10:00-am11:00: NBC The David Letterman Show
am11:00-am11:30: NBC Wheel of Fortune
am11:30-pm12:00: NBC Password Plus
pm12:00-pm12:30: NBC The Hollywood Squares or local programming
pm12:30-pm01:00: NBC Card Sharks
pm01:00-pm02:00: NBC Days of Our Lives (S)
pm02:00-pm02:30: NBC The Doctors (S)
pm02:30-pm03:30: NBC Another World (S)
pm03:30-pm04:00: NBC Texas (S)
pm04:00-pm04:30: NBC The Hollywood Squares or local programming
pm04:30-pm08:00: NBC affiliate fringe programming plus NBC Nightly News

Around this time, ABC had a surge in ratings due to a storyline on "General Hospital" involving Luke and Laura on the run, gaining ratings from people not interested in "Texas" or otherwise newcomers tuning in for the first time wondering what this odd couple on the run were involved in.
