Broadcast/Cable TV History - 1977

1977-00-00 KTVU was added to satellite for Cox systems.

1977-04-00 ONTV (PAY) was launched on channel 52's airwaves during the evenings.

1977-04-29 CBN's Satellite Service, Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network, was launched on satellite.

1977-06-30 Channel 18 San Bernadino was launched. Programming included an Indian (from India) guru named "Maharishi Mahesh Yogi", well known for developing the Transcendental Meditation Technique.

1977-09-22 the regional Manhattan Cable Television regional sports network, The Madison Square Garden Sports Network, was launched on satellite under a new name as UA-Columbia/MSG. In 1978, it was referred to "the temporarily named Madison Square Garden Network" in print ads.

1977-09-22 the regional Madison Square Garden Sports Network launched a satellite version of its Manhattan Cable Television regional sports network as a continuation of its network, named as the Madison Square Garden network; this satellite feed was the original name of the USA Network as a distribution service for cable and pay operators to use.

1977-12-01 "Pinwheel" made its debut on channel C-3 on a QUBE cable system (which also launched 29 other channels that same day) in Columbus, Ohio. It carried "Pinwheel" from 7am-9pm local time.

1977-13-00 Channel 100 signed off.

1977-13-00 Channel 46 Los Angeles signed off.

Cable History Highlights For This Year Range

In 1977, Warner Cable, under the direction of Gustave M. Hauser, demonstrates two-way interactive technology, QUBE, in its Columbus, Ohio system.

In 1977, The FCC approves the use of 4.5 meter earth station receivers. The ruling permits more cable systems to acquire the equipment necessary to receive nationally distributed programming via satellite.
