Broadcast/Cable TV History - 1984

1984-01-31 ARTS signed off; it merged with The Entertainment Channel (which signed off the previous March) to form A&E the following day.

1984-01-31 Cable Health Network signed off; it merged with Daytime to form Lifetime Network the follwing day.

1984-01-31 Daytime signed off, merged with Cable Health Network to form Lifetime Network the following day.

1984-01-31 Spotlight signed off. The transponder slot it once used was occupied the following day with a new Western feed of The Movie Channel.

1984-02-01 KCOX moved to 4 on the Cox San Diego system.

1984-02-01 Arts and Entertainment was launched; it shared with Nickelodeon 8pm-4am ET.

1984-02-01 Lifetime Network was launched.

1984-02-02 The Silent Network was launched. It features two hours a week of "signed" entertainment and information for the nation's hearing impaired.

1984-04-15? (Mid-April date) In-Touch Network was launched. It is an around-the-clock newsstand intended for the visually handicapped with 69 popular periodicals and newspapers as a free audio service.

1984-04-21 Channel 46 Los Angeles was relaunched.

1984-05-01 WPIX-TV was placed on satellite. (some say 1978.)

1984-05-15 ACTS (American Christian Television System) was launched.

1984-09-00 (possibly July 1, 1983?) BET moved to its on own channel when it left the USA Network. BET became a separate, fully-programmed service during the day, expanding from its six-hour format shared on USA Network.

1984-10-01 Rainbow Programming launched American Movie Classics (PAY) showing classic movies.

1984-10-01 Channel 69 San Diego signed on.

1984-10-26 Turner Broadcasting System's Cable Music Channel was launched.

1984-11-08 Satcom 4R satellite was launched.

1984-11-30 Cable Music Channel signs off. Inarguably, it was the biggest flop in cable television history lasting just five weeks.

1984-12-06 AP News Plus was launched. This is an improved information service with high resolution graphics allowing 16 colors on the screen at the same time and 90 pages in the cycle.

Cable History Highlights For This Year Range

In 1984, Microband Corp. of America announces plans to provide wireless cable service.

In 1984, Sports Time, a Midwest Regional sports channel launches April 3rd. It is owned by AnheuserBusch, Multimedia and TCI.

In 1984, Rainbow Programming also takes over management of Sportsvision, later to become SportsChannel Chicago [later becoming FOX Sports Net Chicago]. The network features live coverage of the Chicago White Sox, Blackhawks and Bulls.
