Cable History Highlights For This Year Range

In 1982, In response to the FCC lifting syndicated exclusivity and distant signal rules, the Copyright Royalty Tribunal sets a rate at 3.75 percent of gross basic subscriber revenue for each Distant Signal Equivalent. As an unintended consequence, this stimulates development of nonbroadcast programming. Also affected, cable systems considered and dropped some of the low-viewed distant broadcast channels to reduce their obligations to pay the said rate. Some distant signals were gradually replaced with cable channels as a result.
