1970 Daytime Schedules-Pacific Time Zone Edition

For Pacific Time, ABC followed the Eastern time zone show slotting pattern.

For the CBS shows, the 10am ET-5pm ET shows followed the Central Time Zone slotting airing from 9am-4pm.

For NBC, the shows airing from 10am-1pm ET followed Central Time zone slotting of the 9am-NOON range. For the 1:30pm-4:30pm ET shows, the Pacific Feed aired those shows in the 12pm-3pm range.

1970/01/05-Pacific

On this date, ABC replaced "Dream House" with a long running soaper, "All My Children" created by Agnes Nixon, as was "One Life To Live" debuting two years earlier.

Also note that on the East/Central feed, "AMC" competed with local programming, or in some cases, delayed network programming from the NBC and CBS affiliates. On the Pacific feed, "AMC" competed with soaps on NBC and CBS, so for the first time on this coast, three network stations had a soap opera opposite each other.

1970/03/30-Pacific

When we last reported, ABC added one soaper to bring the total number of soap operas between the three networks to 16, with CBS at 8, NBC at 4 and ABC at 4. All were 30 minute shows totalling eight hours, and from 11:30 ET/10:30 CT until 4:30 ET/3:30 CT, there was at least one soaper running in a five hour span. On the Pacific coast, the soap line ran from 10:30-12pm and 12:30-4:30 for a 5 1/2 hour span interrupted by the 12-12:30 half hour when ABC ran reruns of "Bewitched".

Now, the storyline thickens, as ABC debuts two more soapers and NBC debuts one. ABC moves reruns of "Bewitched" and "That Girl" to run at 11 ET/PT, 10 CT. At 12 ET/PT, 11 CT is "The Best of Everything", followed by "A World Apart".

On NBC, "Another World" spun off a show titled "Another World: Somerset" at 4 ET, 3 CT and 2:30 PT. "AW" was retitled "Another World: Bay City". Both soaps would be retitled as "Another World" and "Somerset" respectively later on. The late daytime "NBC News" left the schedule.

So for those keeping score, between the three networks, 19 soap operas (all half-hours) made up a whopping 9 1/2 hours total, with NBC up to five, ABC at six and CBS holding at eight. On the East/Central feeds, at least one soap can be seen in a five-hour span, but on the Pacific feed, due to ABC running their schedule one hour later than CBS's schedule, it's a six hour span from 10:30 until 4:30. It won't be long before the glut of soapers would shake some of them off the air in the years to come with the stronger ones surviving.

On the final network change of the year, ABC canceled one soaper, "The Best of Everything". It moved reruns of "Bewitched" to the 12pm ET/PT, 11am CT slot. It gave the 11am ET/PT, 10am CT slot to the local stations, but would reclaim that half hour back on April 25, 1977 when it expanded "All My Children" to one hour.

Also, NBC said it was the end of "Life with Linkletter" and debut a new game show, "Words and Music" hosted by Wink Martindale and produced by Jack Quigley with announcer Johnny Gilbert. It aired at 1:30 ET, 12:30 CT and 12pm PT.
