am11:30-pm12:00: CBS Love of Life (S) (through 3/23/73)

pm03:30-pm04:00: CBS The Secret Storm (S) (through 3/23/73)
pm04:00-pm04:30: CBS Vin Scully Show (through 3/23/73)

Here's what changed. NBC cancels "Concentration", which moves to syndication; NBC contracts the Goodson-Todman Productions to produce and syndicate the series while NBC licenses the game show to the company since NBC cannot produce and syndicate their own programming as per rules. NBC replaced its time slot with a new game, "Baffle", hosted by Dick Enberg, in the 10:30 ET, 9:30 CT/PT time slot.

CBS's changes were more massive. Canceled were the soapers "Where the Heart Is" and "Love is a Many Spendorded Thing." Also gone is "Vin Scully Show."

CBS shortened "Love of Life" to 25 minutes at 11:30 ET/10:30 CT/PT and moved the midday CBS News to follow it at :55 past the hour.

CBS moved "The Price is Right" to 3 ET, 2 CT/PT, opposite "GH" on ABC and "AW" on NBC for the ET/CT coasts; on the West, it was opposite "Newlywed Game" on ABC and "RTPP" on NBC. This proved to be problemnatic for NBC.

"The Secret Storm", however, was banished to the death time slot of 4 ET, 3 CT/PT, a time slot often pre-empted by affiliates and limiting national clearance. Many of its competitors were syndicated cartoons, movies, off-network shows, and some network programming for the few that cleared the shows.

Two new game shows premiered on CBS. At 10:30 ET, 9:30 CT/PT, "The $10,000 Pyramid", produced by Bob Stewart Productions, debut, and would last a year on CBS before moving to ABC.

At 3:30 ET, 2:30 CT/PT was "Hollywood's Talking", produced by Jack Barry, with Geoff Edwards hosting. On the Eastern/Central time zones, it was opposite the popular "One Life to Live" soaper on ABC and "RTPP" on NBC. On the West coast, it was opposite the fading "The Dating Game" on ABC and "Somerset" on NBC. The show was gone after three months.

The final addition to the CBS lineup was a new soaper "The Young and the Restless", created by William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell. The show would prove to be a real headache for daytime network programmers on the other two networks as you will see in the years documented here to come.

The ratings were low during its initial years due to network clearance issues at NOON Eastern and even in other time zones that were reluctant to run a new soaper in the NOON ET, 11am CT/PT time slots. Some bumped it to the 1pm ET, NOON CT/PT half hour if they ran local programming at noon. Others didn't carry the show...yet.

As the years went on, it knocked off longtime game showers "Password" and "Jeopardy!" on ABC and NBC opposite it in the ET/CT zones. Once the two networks put on weaker shows, people began to watch the soaper as it entered the top 10 in 1975 and was in the top five in 1976. The soaper never finished outside the top 5 except for the 1980-81 season since the 1975-76 season.

On the West coast, ABC didn't start its lineup until 11:30am.

1973/06/25-Eastern (subtract one hour for Central Time)

The only change to the regular schedule was the cancelation of "Hollywood's Talking" at 3:30 ET, 2:30 CT/PT on CBS. Since all three networks were airing the Watergate hearings at the time before alternating coverage every three days, that time slot technically sat vacant until CBS could begin its run of "Match Game '73" the following week.

1973/07/02-Eastern (subtract one hour for Central Time)

This week, CBS finally debuts "Match Game '73" in the 3:30 ET, 2:30 CT/PT time slot. It would prove to be a popular show as, paired with "The Price is Right", also a Goodman-Todman production, helped CBS dominate the hour.

On the Eastern and Central time zones, it was opposite "OLTL" on ABC and "RTPP" on NBC. NBC would later replace the soaper due to falling ratings. On the West coast, it was opposite "Somerset" on NBC and "The Dating Game" for the first week on ABC, but the week after, ABC replaced it with the dreadful "The Girl in My Life", which may have helped NBC on the West coast more than it hurt ABC in that time slot.

Also this was the final week of "Bewitched" reruns on ABC in the 11:30 ET/PT, 10:30 CT half hour. Reruns of "The Brady Bunch" would replace it next week.

This week, ABC begins airing reruns of "The Brady Bunch" in the 11:30 ET/PT, 10:30 CT half hour slot, and debut "The Girl in My Life" in the 2:30 ET/PT, 1:30 CT half hour slot. The latter would prove to be a ratings bomb as it gradually lost viewers and was gone by the end of 1974.

On NBC, it was the last week of "Sale of the Century" in the 11 ET, 10 CT/PT slot as "Gambit" on CBS finally closed down the Sale. NBC would debut a new game show the following week.

This week, NBC debut a new show, "The Wizard of Odds" hosted by Alex Trebek and produced by Burt Sugarman, in the 11 ET, 10 CT/PT time slot. The show lasted almost a year on NBC, with "Gambit" on CBS giving it strong competition.

There would be no more daytime lineup changes for the rest of the year. ABC, however, would debut a new monthly anthology series in early November.

Beginning this week, ABC debuts another series of anthology specials titled "The ABC Afternoon Playbreak". The monthly 90-minute dramas featured some of the film and TV stars of the era. It aired from 1:30 to 3 ET/PT, and 12:30 to 2 CT. It pre-empted the three game shows that aired during the time span "Let's Make a Deal", "The Newlywed Game", and "The Girl in My Life."

For a week from December 3-7, 1973, it ran a pilot titled "ABC Matinee Today", another dramatic anthology series, also in the same time periods.
