1977 Daytime Schedules-Pacific Time Zone Edition

For Pacific Time and for both CBS and NBC, the 10am ET-5:30pm ET shows followed the Central Time Zone slotting airing from 9am-4:30pm.

ABC's Pacific Time Zone feed has many of its shows using the Central Time zone pattern except where noted for the Eastern feed.

1977/01/03-Pacific

The beginning of 1977 brought in some changes. ABC and NBC continued on their quest to find a successful show to run opposite "Young and the Restless" but without any success.

On NBC, in the 4pm ET, 3pm CT/PT slot, it canceled the soap opera "Somerset" after being trashed in the ratings by ABC's "The Edge of Night" it imported from CBS a year earlier. It moved "The Gong Show" to that time period.

NBC also made changes in other time slots. In the 11:30am ET/10:30am CT/PT slot, it canceled "Stumpers" and replaced it with "Shoot For The Stars" hosted by Geoff Edwards, canceled "50 Grand Slam" and returned "Name That Tune" to the network schedule at noon ET/11am CT/PT, still hosted by Tom Kennedy, and debut a new soap opera called "Lovers and Friends (S)" in the 12:30pm ET/11:30am ET/PT slot.

NBC News at 12:55pm ET/11:55am CT/PT was also canceled.

Note that some NBC affiliates shifted airings of "The Gong Show" to run at 1pm ET/12pm CT and PT if the station elected to not run a locan noon newscast, local or syndicated programming.

1977/01/17-Pacific

On the ABC Eastern/Central feed (not the Pacific feed), the network made a flip flop of its two early soapers and moved "Ryan's Hope (S)" to 12:30pm ET/11:30am CT and moved "All My Children" back to 1pm ET/NOON CT. For the first time, all three networks were airing a soap opera in the 12:30pm ET/11:30am CT slot.

ABC did not flip flop the two soaps on the Pacific feed. It may have been for the reason that ABC was planning to expand "All My Children" to an hour, and the 12:30pm time slot for the 30-minute soaper during the first four months of 1977 would become the second half of the 60-minute soap when it expanded on April 25 (airing at NOON Pacific).

re: All My Children Time Slots

There is conflicting information regarding time slotting for AMC.

re: wikipedia-January 5, 1970 – July 4, 1975: 1:00–1:30 PM (12:00–12:30 PM, CT/PT)

ABC aired "AMC" in the 1-1:30pm slot in the Pacific time zone during that time. ABC aired all of the shows in the Pacific zone at the same time slots as they were seen in the Eastern time zone during this time through early 1974. After that, most of the shows followed the Eastern time zone pattern, with some following Central and no pattern afterwards.

For one week when the soap expanded to an hour, it aired from 12:30-1:30pm Pacific time, same as the Eastern timeslot feed.

re: wikipedia-July 7, 1975 – January 14, 1977: 12:30–1:00 PM (11:30 AM–12:00 PM, CT/PT)

AMC aired at 12:30pm and RH aired at 1pm respectively in the Pacific time zone (same time slots as the Eastern time zone) during the time.

re: wikipedia:-January 17, 1977 – April 22, 1977: 1:00–1:30 PM (12:00–12:30 PM, CT/PT)

AMC and RH changed time slots on the East and Central time zones (12:30/11:30 CT with 1/12 CT). On the Pacific time zone, it was seen on some sources that AMC and RH stayed at their time slots at 12:30 and 1pm respectively.

April 25, 1977 – September 23, 2011: 1:00–2:00 PM (12:00–1:00 PM, CT/PT)

On this date, AMC aired at NOON in the Pacific time zone. That time is correct. RH aired at 1pm Pacific; RH would move to 11:30am in early 1978.

On this date below, ABC replaced "Don Ho" with a new game show called "Second Chance", which wouldn't last long either in the noon ET, 11 CT/PT slot.

1977 Changes-April 25

On this date, ABC made a major change in its schedule by expanding their daytime block by a half hour and into the 11am ET, 10am CT/PT slot held by affiliates since "The Best of Everything" was canceled in 1970.

"Happy Days" reruns moved to 11am ET/10am CT/PT.

On the Eastern/Central feed, ABC moved "Family Feud" to the 11:30am ET/10:30am CT slot from 1:30pm ET/12:30pm CT. "Feud" stayed at 11:30am PT. "Feud" was the only show airing on the west coast that followed the east coast time slotting at 11:30am.

To summarize: "Feud" aired at 11:30am PT and ET, 10:30am CT. "Pyramid" aired at 2pm ET, 1pm CT, and 10:30am PT. Happy Days" aired at 11am ET, 10am CT/PT and "Chance" at NOON ET/11am CT/PT.

All these moves were made so that ABC could finally expand "All My Children" to a full hour from 1-2pm ET, 12-1pm CT/PT.

On the West Coast, "AMC" moved to the noon-1pm slot when it expanded to a full hour. AMC was seen in the same time slot on the Pacific time zone as it was in the Central time zone. "Ryan's Hope", however, continued to air at 1pm PT while airing at 12:30pm ET/11:30am CT.

A quirk on the West coast schedule lists the Pacific time zone feed "RH" beginning three hours AFTER it ended on the Eastern time zone feed. RH aired from 12:30-1pm on the Eastern feed, then three hours after it ended, it began airing on the Pacific feed from 1-1:30pm (or 4-4:30 Eastern time).

This was also the third half hour where three networks competed with soap operas with the addition of the 1:30pm ET half hour. Three networks also had soaps opposite each other in the 12:30pm and 2:30pm ET half hours. While the game show genre was shrinking in numbers on daytime, the soap operas continued to take up the time left behind by failing game shows.

All My Children at a full hour's length caused ratings headaches for the CBS and NBC soapers at 1:30pm ET, 12:30pm CT/PT. ABC further made sure that AMC's audience stay tuned for the second half hour with the practice of having the first half of the soap end a few minutes after the 30 minute mark at about 1:33ET, 12:33 CT/PT. It helped AMC become a top-rated soap in 1979. NBC would answer that problem in 1979. CBS would answer that problem in early 1980.

Also with the move, Family Feud became a top rated show this year.

Due to a schedling quirk on the East coast pattern, there was just a half hour game show, Pyramid, that split up ABC's 3 1/2 hour soap opera time. In January 1978, Pyramid would move to the noon ET/11am CT (staying at 10:30 PT) slot and ABC would expand OLTL and GH to an hour each, causing further problems with audience erosion of NBC's soaps.

On the west coast ABC stations, the soaps ran continuously without a 30-minute game show interruption from NOON-3:30pm.

In 1978 when OLTL and GH would expand to 60 minutes each, and Pyramid moved to NOON ET/11am CT (10:30 PT), ABC's East and Central stations as well as Pacific had a long four-hour continuous block of soaps.
