1976 Daytime Schedules-Eastern/Central Time Zone Edition

Subtract one hour to get the schedule for the Central Time zone.

One of the Sources: The Daytime TV Archive: 1976 (as Eastern Times only)

1976/01/05-Eastern (subtract one hour for Central Time)

On this day, NBC pulls "The Magnificent Marble Machine" for two weeks and begins airing an advice show, "Take My Advice" at 12:30 ET, 11:30 CT/PT.

When ABC made more scheduling changes last week, some shows shifted around in the east, but not in the west, and vice versa.

For some reason, ABC kept "Deal" at 1:30pm PT, though it moved it to NOON ET. In either case, it was gone by August. "Reason" was shifted to 1:30 ET and 11am PT. "Neighbors" aired simultaneously on the Eastern, Central, and Pacific zones at 2:30ET/1:30CT/11:30PT. "Edge" aired at 4pm ET, but at NOON in the western time zone. Four of ABC's shows followed the eastern time zone scheduling: AMC, RH, Pyramid, and GH. OLTL and Happy Days followed the central time zone pattern. The other four followed no pattern at all.

We'll revisit the Pacific time zone schedule when OLTL and GH expanded to 45 minutes each.

On this date below, ABC replaced "The Neighbors" with a new game show "Break the Bank" in the 2:30pm ET, 1:30pm CT, 11:30am PT slot. It was hosted by Tom Kennedy and produced by Barry-Enright Productions.

That would also last a short time, in fact, three months. In the past three years, ABC went through five different game shows opposite NBC and CBS's popular soaps in that timeslot. So ABC pulled the show in favor of using that half hour to expand two soap operas in July. "Break the Bank" moved to syndication the following fall.

On this date, NBC moved "Sweepstakes" to the 10:30am ET, 9:30am CT/PT slot, canceled "High Rollers", and added reruns of "Sanford and Son" to the earliest slot.

As NBC was still having ratings troubles in the noon ET, 11am CT/PT slot, it canceled "Marble Machine" and "Take My Advice" and added two new shows. It added "The Fun Factory" at noon ET, 11am CT/PT, and the demented "The Gong Show" at 12:30pm ET, 11:30am CT/PT. Like many other shows opposite "Restless" on CBS, "Factory" failed and was gone from the schedule in October. Meanwhile, ABC was cancelling "Let's Make a Deal" in the noon ET, 11am CT and 1:30 PT slot and would replace it with a new game show in July.

On the Eastern/Central feed, ABC replaced "Let's Make a Deal" at 12 ET, 11 CT, with a new game show "Hot Seat", which proved to be no match for CBS, and was gone in October. "Rhyme and Reason" at 1:30 ET, 12:30 CT was replaced with a long running game show, "Family Feud", hosted by Richard Dawson and produced by Mark Goodson-Bill Todman Productions. It canceled "Break the Bank" and its final airing would be July 23. On July 26, "One Life to Live" would air at 2:30 ET, 1:30 CT/PT, followed by "General Hospital" at 3:15 ET, 2:15 CT/PT.

On the Pacific feed, ABC shifted the canceled "Break the Bank" to 1:30 PT, replacing the canceled "Let's Make a Deal" there, and to prepare the 1:30-3pm PT slot for the expansion of two soaps to 45 minutes each on July 26. "Hot Seat" replaced "Rhyme and Reason" at 11am, and "Family Feud" began airing at 11:30am. Also to move to new slots July 26, "The Edge of Night" and "The $20,000 Pyramid" would be shifted to new time slots on the ABC Pacific Feed.

1976/07/26-Eastern (subtract one hour for Central Time)

ABC made a major move by expanding two soap operas to 45 minutes each, thus causing a minor change on the Eastern/Central feed, but another major ripple on the ABC Pacific Feed.

On the ABC Eastern/Central feed, "Break the Bank" vacated the 2:30pm ET, 1:30pm CT time despite the fact it was one of the more popular game shows on ABC. "One Life to Live" expanded to 45 minutes and took over that time period. "General Hospital" also expanded to 45 minutes and took the 3:15 ET, 2:15 CT slot. Simple enough. The idea was for viewers to flow from OLTL to GH for 90 minutes.

For the first time since the Spring of 1973, all three networks were progamming a soap opera opposite each other, starting with the 2:30pm ET, 1:30pm CT slot, and that wouldn't be the last of such three-way soap opera battles as we get closer to the soapy 80s decade.

On the ABC Pacific feed, it's not that easy as I witnessed first hand where the shows were going back in the 1970s here in Southern California. ABC shifted "The Edge of Night", which was airing before the sun actually hit its highest point in the southern sky at 12pm, to 3pm, the latest slot available. In the earlier days, "Edge" first aired on CBS at 4:30 ET, 3:30 CT, 4:30 PT through 1960 then 3:30 PT afterwards and got respectiable ratings.

As "One Life to Live" and "General Hospital" took over the 90-minute period from 1:30-3 PT, the 2 PT occupant, "The $20,000 Pyramid", was shifted to 12 PT.

ABC aired its 1:30-2:30pm ET game shows, "Feud" and "Pyramid", at 11:30am-12:30pm Pacific time, the same time slots it aired in the Mountain time zones. (Arizona during the months when the rest of the nation was observing Daylight Saving Time would air them from 10:30-11:30am, because Arizona didn't move their clocks back or forth, and 11:30am-12:30pm during standard time).

On the west coast, the game shows formed a 90 minute block from 11am-12:30, with the soaps going as a three hour block afterwards. The soap block was interrupted by the two late PM game shows on the East coast.

It should be noted that on the West coast, "OLTL"'s start time was shifted from 3:30 to 2:30 to 1:30 in a 28 month period. "GH" which had been on the East coast time slot at 3pm now follows the Central time slot at 2:15pm.

The only two shows on the ABC Pacific Feed that aired in the same time slots as it did in the Eastern/Central feeds were "All My Children" and "Ryan's Hope" from 12:30-1:30 ET/PT, but at 11:30-12:30 CT.

ABC's Pacific time zone shows from 12:30-1:30pm (RH, AMC) were the 12:30-1:30pm Eastern time shows; the same two shows were seen in the Mountain Time zone from 10:30-11:30am live from ABC's East coast feed. The two game shows, "FF" and "Pyramid", followed the Mountain Time zone pattern from 11:30-12:30. The other six ABC shows seen in the Pacific time zone aired in the same time slots as ABC's shows in the Central time zone (eg: Happy Days aired at 10:30am PT/CT, Edge of Night at 3pm PT/CT, etc.).

It also added "50 Grand Slam" at 12 ET, 11 CT/PT hosted by Tom Kennedy, also lasting for three months. It had Allen and Kennedy back-to-back for the first time since last year when their game shows were neighbors on ABC. NBC canceled "Celebrity Sweepstakes" and "The Fun Factory."
