1975 Daytime Schedules-Pacific Time Zone Edition

For Pacific Time and for CBS, the 10am ET-5pm ET shows followed the Central Time Zone slotting airing from 9am-4pm.

For NBC, the shows airing from 10am-1pm ET followed Central Time zone slotting of the 9am-NOON range. For the 1:30pm-4:30pm ET shows, the Pacific Feed aired those shows in the 12pm-3pm range. Beginning with the April 21 week, NBC changed the time slots for its late three hours in the Pacific Time Zone so that it followed the Central time zone pattern.

Since April of 1974, the ABC Pacific Time zone feed began a slow morph into following a Central Time zone pattern that would gradually change over the course of just over six years. As shows airing on the East Coast slotting got canceled, some of which got moved earlier anyway, many of the newer shows appearred in earlier time slots, except for new soaper "Ryan's Hope", which premiered at the 1pm Eastern Time slot on the Pacific Time Zone feed.

When "Password", a 12pm ET/11 CT show that aired at 12pm PT got canceled in June, "Showoffs" replaced the game show at 12pm ET/11 CT, but was slotted at 11am PT to follow the gradual phasing-in of having the Pacific Time zone feed follow the Central Time zone show slotting pattern. That would conclude in 1980. More will be explained in June-July of 1975 when ABC overhauls half of its schedule then.

1975/01/06-Pacific

As of this date, NBC decides to expand "Another World" to one hour; it became the first daytime soap opera to do so. That move proved to rile up CBS and ABC during the year. NBC moved "How to Survive a Marriage (S)" to the 1:30pm ET, 12:30pm CT and 12pm PT slot and canceled "Jeopardy!" in that slot.

NBC also made changes to its early half of the daytime schedule. At 10am ET, 9am CT/PT, it canceled "Name That Tune" and moved "Celebrity Sweepstakes" there. In the 12:30pm ET, 11:30am CT/PT slot where "Sweepstakes" used to run, NBC debut "Blank Check" hosted by Art James.

Also, NBC canceled "Winning Streak" and debut what would become a classic in the 10:30-11am ET, 9:30-10am CT/PT slot: "Wheel of Fortune" initially hosted by Chuck Woolery and produced by Merv Griffin. Those moves would prove to be fatal to two of CBS's morning game shows by summer.

In April, NBC would finally solve their longtime problem of filling a timeslot that had been a major problem since the network lost "Let's Make a Deal" to ABC in 1969. Also in April, ABC would add one game show that would be a record number of hours for that genre.

Sometime during the year 1975, "The Guiding Light" became "Guiding Light".

1975/04/21-Pacific

Beginning with the April 21 week, NBC changed the time slots for its late three hours in the Pacific Time Zone so that it followed the Central time zone pattern. NBC had a tough time clearing its NOON show on the West coast, though it aired at 1:30 ET / 12:30 CT. After the change, its 3pm PT show was the new problem for the network as affiliates often pre-empted the shows for syndicated fare.

Also on April 21, NBC expanded its second soaper, "Days", to a full hour. This scheduling change for the west coast may have been from NBC affiliates pressuring the network to open up the 1/2 hour for local news at noon. We just don't know for sure.

As of this date, there were a record 19 game shows on daytime network TV, a level that will never be seen ever again. The 19 level was achieved when ABC replaced reruns of "The Brady Bunch" with a short-lived game show "Blankety Blanks" hosted by Bill Cullen, with Bob Clayton announcing and produced by Bob Stewart. It aired at 11:30am ET, 10:30am CT/PT. The show was low-rated opposite offerings from the other two networks and was pulled after June 27.

Also as of this date, NBC expanded another of its soap operas, "Days of Our Lives (S)", to one hour, also causing some ratings problems for ABC. NBC canceled the low-rated "How to Survive a Marriage (S)" to make room for it. NBC finally solved its six and a half year long problem of filling the time slot formerly held by "Let's Make a Deal" when Monty Hall shopped it to ABC in late 1968. The hour-long "Days" would prove to be successful in the long run.

1975/06/16-Pacific

On this date, CBS debut another game show "Musical Chairs" in the 4pm ET, 3pm CT/PT slot. It shifted "Tattletales" to 11am ET, 10am CT/PT replacing "Now You See It". Adam Wade was the host of the game show "Chairs" which was produced in the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City. The 4pm ET / 3pm PT time slot was often a problem for the networks as many affiliates chose to air lucrative syndicated programming at that time, so ratings for many of the shows were low. "Chairs" got pulled before the end of the year.

In the 10 ET, 9 CT/PT slot, CBS replaced "The Joker's Wild" with "Spin Off", a game show that should have gotten better ratings, but didn't. It was hosted by Jim Lange and produced by Nicholson-Muir.

Meanwhile, ABC was getting ready to overhaul half of its daytime lineup within a few weeks due to poor ratings for its game shows, with CBS's "Young and the Restless" mostly to blame for problems in the 12 ET, 11 CT/PT timeslot, which also gave NBC a longtime problem as well. This year may have been the time when soap operas were becoming a boomer college genre while game shows were beginning to fall by the wayside thanks to a glut of game shows on network and syndicated TV.

Canceled from ABC's schedule during June were "Blankety Blanks", "Password", "Split Second," "The Big Showdown", and "The Money Maze". New shows would replace them within the month.

1975/06/30-Pacific

On the date below, ABC overhauled the first four half hours of its daytime sched, killing off its three game shows, reinstating reruns of "The Brady Bunch" for two months, debut a game show "Showoffs", and expanding "All My Children (S)" for one hour for a week until "Ryan's Hope" debut in the 1pm ET/PT, 12 CT slot the following week. It was part of ABC's campaign "It's a Brand New Day on ABC."

"Showoffs" was hosted by Bobby Van and was a Goodson-Toddman production and it lasted almost through the end of the year. It aired at 12 ET, 11 CT/PT. It couldn't nudge any viewers away from CBS's noontime soaper which became a top ten daytime show.

On this date, ABC completes its overhaul by adding "Ryan's Hope (S)" at 1pm ET/PT, 12 CT. "All My Children (S)" assumed the 12:30pm ET/PT, 11:30am CT slot.

ABC then debuted a new game show "Rhyme and Reason" hosted by Bob Eubanks" at 2:30 ET, 1:30 CT and 11:30am PT.

ABC also returned "You Don't Say", previously on NBC from the previous decade, at 4pm ET, 3pm CT and 12pm PT. It was hosted by Tom Kennedy, fresh from "Split Second."

NBC, also suffering from CBS's dominance in that time slot, made its changes in the noon ET, 11am CT/PT hour. It added the over-the-top game show "Magnificent Marble Machine", hosted by Art James and produced by Heater-Quigley, while shifting "Jackpot" to 12:30 ET, 11:30 CT/PT. "Blank Check" was canceled.

"The ABC Afternoon Playbreak" would have its final occasional broadcast on August 14, 1975.

As of this week, no more occasional "ABC Afternoon Playbreaks" would be airing on ABC.

On this date, CBS made several changes to its game show lineup. It moved "The Price is Right" back to mornings at 10:30am ET, 9:30am CT/PT. It bumped "Gambit" a half hour back to 11am ET, 10am CT/PT. In the late afternoon, "Match Game" moved ahead a half hour to 3pm ET, 2pm CT/PT, followed by the shifted "Tattletales" to 3:30pm ET, 2:30pm CT/PT.

The odd part was that both "Gambit" and "High Rollers" were produced by the same company, Heater-Quigley, and featured gambling as a theme airing at the 11am ET, 10am CT/PT slot. "Rollers" would eventually move to another time period by the end of the year.
