1975 Daytime Schedules-Eastern/Central Time Zone Edition

Special Notes

On November 3-7, 1975, NBC aired one-hour special editions of two of its game shows. "Wheel of Fortune" aired at 10:30 ET/9:30 CT/PT, bumping off "High Rollers", then an hour of "Hollywood Squares" at 11:30 ET/10:30 CT/PT, moving "Magnificent Marble Machine" to 12:30 ET/11:30 CT/PT, bumping off "3 for the Money"

On December 1, 1975, ABC aired a 90 minute episode of "The Edge of Night" at 3pm ET, 2pm CT and 12pm PT. Also on the ABC Pacific feed, "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" were fed from 2:30-3:30. In both cases, "General Hospital" and "One Life to Live" were pre-empted.

NBC, meanwhile, has gone hour-long happy on two of its own game shows. It expanded "Wheel of Fortune" to one hour, pre-empting "High Rollers" for the week. It expanded "Hollywood Squares" to one hour for one week, moving "Marble Machine" back one half hour and pre-empting "Three For the Money" for the week.

1975/12/01-Eastern (subtract one hour for Central Time)

On this date below, all three networks made changes to its lineup.

At NBC, it expanded "Wheel of Fortune" to one hour for one and a half months. It moved "High Rollers" to the 12 ET, 11 CT/PT slot, moved "Marble Machine" to the 12:30 ET, 11:30 CT/PT slot, and canceled "Three For The Money."

On CBS and ABC, the networks were still having ratings problems due to NBC's popular two hour-long soapers in the late afternoon and changes needed to be made. CBS wanted to expand "As The World Turns (S)" to one hour in its 1:30 ET, 12:30 CT/PT slot, but it had to make room for it by dropping a half hour show. "Turns" would go head-to-head with "Days" in the 1:30 ET, 12:30 CT/PT slot. It was reported that CBS wanted to use the 1pm ET, 12pm CT/PT slot for the first half hour of "Turns", but the affiliates would not cede the slot for that as that's used for local news. CBS considered moving "Edge of Night" back to its original slot of 4:30 ET, 3:30 CT/PT, a slot that had been given to local affiliates, but the stations also nixed the idea. So something on CBS had to go.

"Edge" was CBS's lowest rated program on their sched and informed its producer Proctor and Gamble sometime during the summer that it wanted to to let Edge go.

CBS wanted to expand "Turns" to an hour as early as September, but it could have easily canceled a low-rated late afternoon game show instead of cancelling "Edge" to make room for it. If "Turns" aired at 1:30/2:30 for one hour, "Guiding Light" would air at 2:30/1:30 (still a 30 minute show at the time), then "Edge" might have aired at 3/2 if CBS chose to keep it over airing reruns of their popular show "All in the Family", which they eventually did on Dec 1.

Meanwhile, ABC's daytime revamping had only one bright spot that its low-rated new "Ryan's Hope (S)" soaper was getting some traction, while two of its three new game shows were not holding up in the ratings.

Proctor and Gamble approached ABC about moving "Edge" to the network, but ABC was obliged to run other programs until one show could be freed up on December 1st when ABC would eventually cancel "You Don't Say," allowing "Edge" to return to a late afternoon slot of 4pm ET, 3pm CT, 12pm PT (but would move to 3 PT in July 1976) on that day. P&G negotiated with CBS to allow "Edge" to run until the end of November until ABC had the 4pm ET time slot freed up.

On December 1st, ABC debut "Edge" as a 90 minute special in the 3-4:30 ET, 2-3:30 CT, 12-1:30 PT slot for one day, while CBS expanded "Turns" to an hour at 1:30 ET, 12:30 CT/PT, and bumped "Guiding Light (S)" to 2:30pm ET, 1:30 CT/PT. CBS wasn't done with the afternoon yet. It added reruns of "All in the Family" at 3pm ET, 2pm CT/PT, and bumped "Match Game" to 3:30 ET, 2:30 CT/PT, and Tattletales to 4 ET, 3 CT/PT, while canceling "Give-n-Take" that occupied the 4 ET, 3 CT/PT slot.

In markets where affiliates chose to air "Edge" in the 4pm slot, it beat out offerings from CBS and eventually caused NBC's "Somerset (S)" to set at the end of 1976.

"Edge" aired at noon on ABC's west coast stations, a time slot often pre-empted for local news. On December 1st, "Edge" aired from 12pm-1:30pm PT, while bumping "All My Children (S)" and "Ryan's Hope (S)" to the 2:30-3:30pm PT hour. The following day, "AMC" and "RH" returned to their slots at 12:30pm and 1pm PT. "OLTL" aired at 2:30 PT and "GH" aired at 3 PT.

In the late afternoon on the west coast, "General Hospital" continued to air at 3pm until ABC made changes the following summer and moved "One Life to Live", "Hospital", and "Edge" into a central time zone pattern of 1:30-3:30pm when the first two soapers expanded to 45 minutes each.

ABC also expanded "Let's Make a Deal" to one hour this week only at 1:30 ET/PT, 12:30 CT, and pre-empted "The $10,000 Pyramid" for the week.

ABC also moved "Rhyme and Reason" to 1:30 ET, 12:30 CT and 11am PT and added "The Neighbors" hosted by Regis Philbin at 2:30 ET, 1:30 CT and 11:30 PT. "Neighbors" would do poorly and would be gone in April.
