1978 Daytime Schedules-Eastern/Central Time Zone Edition

Subtract one hour to get the schedule for the Central Time zone. Many ABC shows on the Pacific Time feed use Central Time slotting except where noted.

One of the Sources: The Daytime TV Archive: 1978 (as Eastern Times only)

1978/01/16-Eastern (subtract one hour for Central Time)

On this date, ABC expanded their two 45 minute soaps, "One Life to Live" and "General Hospital" to 60 minutes each. These two, plus the 60 minute "All My Children", is noted for setting a record of a network having three shows airing together in a three-hour span in the same order, starting on January 16, 1978 and ending on September 23, 2011 when "AMC" had its last broadcast.

On the Eastern/Central feed, ABC moved "The $20,000 Pyramid" to 12 ET, 11 CT, but stayed where it was at 10:30 PT on the Pacific feed. "The Better Sex" was canceled and its half-hour was used to expand the two 45-minute soaps to one hour each.

On the Pacific feed, ABC moved "Ryan's Hope" to 11:30am, and slid "Family Feud" ahead to 11am, following "Pyramid" at 10:30am. On the Eastern/Central feed, "Family Feud" aired at 11:30am ET/10:30am CT and "Pyramid" at 12pm ET/11am CT, the reverse of how it aired on the Pacific feed. This stayed that way until ABC canceled "Pyramid" in 1980 and moved "Feud" to NOON ET/11am CT, but "Feud" stayed at 11am PT where its been since this date. By the end of 1980, ABC has finished with its six year long project of shifting its western schedule from following the Eastern time slot pattern to the Central time slot pattern, the same CBS and NBC uses.

With more changes due to two soaps expanding from 45 to 60 minutes, all except two shows follow the CT zone pattern. Note that on the East coast, Feud and Pyramid as of Jan 16, 1978, aired in the same time slot as they did on the West coast between Jul 26, 1976 and April 22, 1977. On April 25, 1977, Feud on the East coast moved to 11:30am, the same time slot as it aired on the West coast.

ABC had a four-hour continuous block of soap operas beginning at 12:30 ET, 11:30 CT/PT. There were now four half-hours where three networks had soaps on opposite each other.
