1974 Daytime Schedules-Pacific Time Zone Edition

For Pacific Time and for CBS, the 10am ET-5pm ET shows followed the Central Time Zone slotting airing from 9am-4pm.

For NBC, the shows airing from 10am-1pm ET followed Central Time zone slotting of the 9am-NOON range. For the 1:30pm-4:30pm ET shows, the Pacific Feed aired those shows in the 12pm-3pm range.

The ABC lineup here followed the Eastern Time zone pattern through March. Beginning in April, the Pacific Time zone feed would begin a slow morph into following a Central Time zone pattern that would gradually change over the course of just over six years.

Special Notes

A 90 minute episode of How to Survive a Marriage aired on NBC on Jan 7, 1974.

A 60 minute episode of Another World aired on NBC on May 3, 1974.

A 60 minute episode of Days of Our Lives aired on NBC on November 20, 1974.

1974/01/07-Pacific

On this date, NBC literally gave CBS's "Young and the Restless" a better chance of becoming a top ten daytime show in the ratings by shifting "Jeopardy!" from the noon ET, 11am CT/PT slot to the 10:30am ET, 9:30am CT/PT slot and in its former place, debuting "Jackpot!", a game show that did worse in the ratings than its predecessor in the slot did. Geoff Edwards hosted the game show produced by Bob Stewart. This game show marked a point where quiz shows were beginning to give way to other forms of game shows that were not quiz shows, started by the revival of "Match Game" in the summer of 1973. "Jackpot!" and games like it were aimed at females who generally preferred to watch the soaps.

1974 saw a glut of game shows not just in network daytime, but all over syndication with "Concentration", "Cross Wits", "Dealer's Choice" and many others, plus some airing 1-2 nights a week during the Prime Time access period between 7-8pm ET/PT and 6-7pm CT.

Since "Young and the Restless" debut last March of 1973, "Jeopardy!" began to lose ratings, but still had a male audience for the slot, though it was competing with ABC's "Password" in the slot for the game show viewers (on the West coast, "Jeopardy!" and "Password" air apart of each other at 11am and NOON on their respective networks). With the loss of the older male audience for lunchtime when NBC shifted "Jeopardy!" out of the noon ET, 11am CT/PT slot, the ratings for NBC at that time began to sag even further, helping CBS's new soaper, but "Password" was beginning to show some aging as it began a ratings slide. "Password" on the West coast, however, aired at NOON PT, one hour later than "Restless" did on the CBS West coast stations did, but again, the noontime clearance problem with many local stations running their noontime news didn't help ABC or NBC's shows on the West coast either.

On the west coast, during the year 1974, it looked like ABC's schedule was beginning to tank thanks to CBS making many schedule changes in 1972-73 by adding game shows that competed against ABC's late afternoon games airing from 2-3pm PT. CBS's afternoon game shows, "The Price is Right" and "Match Game '74" were on opposite two of ABC's game shows, "The Newlywed Game" and "The Girl in My Life" on the Pacific Time Zone, and two of NBC's soapers "How to Survive a Marriage" at 2pm PT and "Somerset" at 2:30 PT.

CBS's two game shows named competed against NBC's "Another World" and "How to Survive a Marraige" and ABC's "General Hospital" and "One Life to Live" in the 3-4pm ET, 2-3pm CT time periods, causing some sagging on its two competitors. ABC had no competition from 3:30pm to 4:30pm Pacific time, but "One Life to Live", airing at 3:30pm PT, may have been suffering from affiliate clearnace problems as its late 4pm PT rerun strip "Love, American Style." "Life" was still competitive against "Match" on the ET/CT zones and survived, but ironically, "Survive" on NBC didn't survive long.

In April of 1974, ABC's Pacific feed would begin to shift some shows earlier by using an altered scheduling pattern so that its daytime schedule would start and end one hour earlier as we will see in another Pacific time zone lineup in that month. Some of the ABC affiliates had been delaying the late afternoon network shows to air between 9am and 11:30 am.

Shows affected:

am11:00-am11:30: NBC Jeopardy! (through 1/04/74)

pm02:00-pm02:30: NBC Return to Peyton Place (S) (through 1/04/74)

NBC made some changes to these shows affected. "Baffle" was moved to 12:30 ET, 11:30 CT/PT. "The Who, What or Where Game" was gone. "Jeopardy!" moved to 10:30 ET, 9:30 CT/PT. "Jackpot!" premiered at 12:00 ET, 11:00 CT/PT. "How to Survive a Marriage" replaced "Return to Peyton Place" at 3:30pm ET, 2:30pm CT and 2pm PT after losing to "Match Game '73" on the ET/CT zones, and to "Price is Right" on the PT.

Also due to poor clearances and ratings, "The Secret Storm" was canceled by CBS. It would be ten days before "Tattletales" replaced it due to CBS running a special week airing of "CBS Network 90" running from 3-4:30pm ET and 2-3:30pm CT/PT.

1974/04/01-Pacific

Shows affected:

am10:30-am11:00: CBS The $10,000 Pyramid (through 3/29/74)
am11:00-am11:30: CBS Gambit (through 3/29/74)
pm12:30-pm12:55: NBC Baffle (through 3/29/74)

CBS canceled "The $10,000 Pyramid", but it moved to ABC the following month. It slid "Gambit" in its former time slot to 10:30 ET and 9:30 CT/PT. At 11am ET, 10am CT/PT, CBS premiered a new game show "Now You See It" hosted by Jack Narz. "Gambit" would be responsible for NBC moving "Jeopardy!" to another time slot later on.

On NBC, "Baffle" was gone and replaced with "Celebrity Sweepstakes" hosted by Jim McKrell.

On the ABC Pacific Time Zone feed (not the Eastern and Central feed), it shifted around four shows to move the start time of its schedule an hour earlier as we will explain.

On this date, April 1 (date confirmed), ABC shifted its west coast schedule so that it starts at 10:30am and ends at 3:30pm. The odd part is that ABC has scheduled a few shows earlier while maintaining the time slots of some of the other shows, thus some of the shows followed the East Coast time pattern, while some were on the Central time pattern, or no particular pattern as we see here:

am10:30-am11:00: The Brady Bunch (through 4/18/75) (same as Central)
am11:00-am11:30: Love, American Style (airs 4pm ET)
am11:30-pm12:00: The Girl in My Life (airs 2:30pm ET)
pm12:00-pm12:30: Password (through 11/15/74) (same as ET)
pm12:30-pm01:00: Split Second (through 6/27/75) (same as ET)
pm01:00-pm01:30: All My Children (S) (through 6/27/75) (same as ET)
pm01:30-pm02:00: Let's Make a Deal (same as ET)
pm02:00-pm02:30: The Newlywed Game (through 12/20/74) (same as ET)
pm02:30-pm03:00: One Life to Live (S) (through 7/23/76) (same as Central)
pm03:00-pm03:30: General Hospital (S) (through 7/23/76) (same as ET)
(occasional specials)
pm01:30-pm03:00: ABC Afternoon Playbreak (through 8/14/75) (same as ET)
am11:30-pm12:00: One Life to Live (S) (on days when Playbreak aired)
(Wednesday occasional specials)
pm03:30-pm04:30: ABC Afterschool Specials

By mid-1980, ABC's entire west coast schedule would be using the Central time zone pattern.

Also note that "Girl" aired on the Pacific and Eastern/Central time zones simultaneously. 2:30pm ET, 1:30pm CT is 11:30am PT.

"Brady Bunch" was simply moved ahead to 10:30am, so it was opposite the same shows on the other two networks as it was on the East coast which aired at 11:30am, 10:30am Central time.

ABC's 4pm ET show was shifted to 11am to fill in that time slot. In real time, the 11am show on ABC aired two hours BEFORE the same show did on the Eastern feed at 4pm ET (which was 1pm PT).

ABC wanted to keep "OLTL" with "GH", so it used the 2:30pm PT slot for "OLTL". Since 1976, "OLTL" preceeded "GH" on the Eastern/Central time zones. Also, "OLTL" was a better fit for the 2:30pm PT slot than "Girl" was as it was a better competitor to CBS's popular "Match Game '74".

ABC kept six of its remaining shows on Eastern time. The reason was that their shows still performed well enough, but within a year, three of them would leave the air, but their soaps would survive.

Also note that when ABC ran a "ABC Afternoon Playbreak" special, it pre-empted a trio of shows ABC aired at 1:30-3pm ET/12:30-2pm CT: "Let's Make a Deal", "The Newlywed Game", and "The Girl in My Life." Since it aired at 1:30-3pm PT on the Western feed, it affected the West feed airing of "One Life to Live" airing at 2:30. Since it pre-empted "Girl" on the Eastern feed, it didn't air on the Western feed where it would be slotted at 11:30am PT. Instead, ABC placed "One Life" there as a special time airing to confuse soap viewers on the West coast who think it didn't air at all during the day.

On the Eastern/Central feed, ABC canceled reruns of "Love, American Style" and picked up "The $10,000 Pyramid" after CBS canceled it during the winter to run at 4pm ET, 3pm CT.

On the Western feed, ABC moved "The Girl in My Life" to 11am and slotted "The $10,000 Pyramid" at 11:30am. "Girl" was opposite "Young and the Restless" on CBS, which was becoming a popular show among women, thanks to Match Game '74 having some of the "Restless" stars guesting as panelists on occasion to cross-promote the soap. "Girl" would be gone by Christmas.

am10:00-am10:30: NBC The Wizard of Odds (through 6/28/74)
pm12:00-pm12:30: NBC Three on a Match (through 6/28/74)

With CBS's morning game shows beating up on NBC's games, and it's latest game losing it's in its slot, NBC made some changes in three time slots.

Gone are "The Wizard of Odds" hosted by Alex Trebek and "Three on a Match" hosted by Bill Cullen. "Jeopardy!" was moved to 1:30pm ET, 12:30pm CT, 12pm PT. Two new game shows premiered. "Winning Streak", hosted by Bill Cullen, aired at 10:30am ET, 9:30am CT/PT. It was followed by "High Rollers" hosted by Alex Trebek at 11am ET, 10am CT/PT.

"Rollers" would pose a problem for CBS in the competiting time slot and would later make "Now You See It"..."Now You Don't" within a year. "Streak", however, didn't do so well in the ratings and was gone just after the new year began, as was "Jeopardy!", which suffered from low ratings opposite CBS's soaper "As The World Turns" on the East and Central time zones, but opposite "Password" on the West, plus the usual noontime local affiliate pre-emptions for news on some stations hindering its coverage.

In four weeks, NBC makes another change.

NBC would try the game show again in 1977, but it would be gone again within six months during that year. In the sitcom "Three's Company," it was one of the game shows The Ropers would be watching.

1974/11/18-Pacific

CBS was slowly beginning to enjoy success with its over a year-old soaper "Young and the Restless" while ABC and NBC continued to have ratings problems in the noon ET, 11am CT/PT slot, though "Young" competed with "Jackpot!" on both coasts, but different ABC shows on both coasts.

NBC held on for its "Jackpot!" show in that slot through next spring.

ABC reformatted "Password" into an all-celebrity version featuring six stars winning money for their charities, and retitled "The Password All-Stars." The format did so bad that the show reverted back to a contestant-based version after three months.

During the fall, ABC would cancel "The Newlywed Game" at 2pm ET/PT, 1pm CT and "The Girl in My Life" at 2:30pm ET, 1:30pm CT, 11am PT after getting pummeled in their respective time slots. After the first day of winter, ABC would promote a game show relegated to the death slot on the 4pm ET/3pm CT zones to a better time slot along the way.

pm03:30-pm04:30: ABC ABC Afterschool Specials (Wednesday occasional specials through 12/5/96)

1974/12/23-Pacific

Shows Affected:

am11:00-am11:30: ABC The Girl in My Life (through 12/20/74)
am11:30-pm12:00: ABC The $10,000 Pyramid (through 12/20/74)
pm02:00-pm02:30: ABC The Newlywed Game (through 12/20/74)

In the final daytime scheduling change of 1974, with CBS and NBC dominating the affected time periods, ABC made changes to three of its game slow time slots.

Gone were "The Newlywed Game" and "The Girl in My Life." ABC moved "The $10,000 Pyramid" to 2pm ET/PT and 1pm CT. ABC premiered two new game shows: "The Money Maze" hosted by Nick Clooney, airing at 4pm ET, 3pm CT, 11am PT, and "The Big Showdown" hosted by Jim Peck at 2:30pm ET, 1:30pm CT, 11:30am PT.

Note that ABC's "Big Showdown" aired at 2:30pm ET, 1:30pm CT, 11:30am PT, and perhaps 12:30pm MT as well, simultaneously on the Eastern, Central, and Pacific time zones. During U.S. Standard time, it corresponds to 7:30pm UTC, and 6:30pm UTC during U.S. Daylight Saving time.

Also in a strange twist, when most network daytime shows aired two hours later in UTC time on the Pacific feed than on the Eastern feed (example: "The Price is Right" aired at 3pm ET or 8pm UTC during U.S. standard time on the East feed, 2pm PT or 5pm ET which is 10pm UTC on the West feed), "Money Maze" aired two hours earlier on the Pacific feed in real time than it did on the Eastern feed (11am PT is 2pm ET or 7pm UTC, 4pm ET is 9pm UTC, all UTC times are during U.S. standard time.)
