This Dave in History July 30

07-30-1985: The Great Stereo Giveaway: Dave tries to give away an RCA GKC 2050 stereo television console by phoning folks at random. There's no answer in Nevada, a Pennsylvania line is disconnected; after being hung up and cursed at by another call to Pennsylvania, Dave finally persuades a call to accept the prize.

07-30-1987: Steve Martin asks to borrow Dave's trademark pencil-throw, but when he tries it, he misses the window -- many times. After a commercial break, there are thousands of pencils all over the set as Steve still tries to hit the window. Meanwhile, writer Adam Resnick is carried away on a stretcher, with two pencils lodged in his chest.

07-30-1987: Top Ten Commercial Casket Models - 4. The Comfort-King Velvetliner (endorsed by Paul Anka).

07-30-1997: "What's on Other Channels" bit.

07-30-1997: A honking horn prompts Dave to investigate, and we get two Daves at once. Yes, it's the return of Creepy Dave.

07-30-1997: Congrats to Rob Burnett and his wife Eunice on the birth of their second child yesterday.

07-30-1997: Guest Billy Connolly is quite entertaining.

07-30-1997: Top Ten Ways to Mispronounce Hideki Irabu - 8. Pataki, I Love You; 6. Hideki Irabooted-Down-To-The-Minors.

07-30-1998: Guest Jenni always has a camera on her on the internet. Also, the Smashing Pumpkins perform outside.

07-30-1998: In segment 6, an audience guy flips off the camera.

07-30-1998: Know Your Current Events: one of the players has had three kids, is 7 months pregnant with another one, and gives her occupation as "Mom". Amazingly, she's from Utah.

07-30-1998: Top Ten Other Things To Say When Stepping on the Moon, read live in the theater by Buzz Aldrin (closing music: "Walking on the Moon").

07-30-1999: Assistant Lee Anne Archibald, who has been at the show since 1996, is leaving to marry Mark Pope of the Indiana Pacers?

07-30-1999: Bob Borden, the 14th floor receptionist, sits in the guest chair, and we see "Bob Borden Goes Home" (but not to Steubenville, Ohio).

07-30-1999: CBS Mailbag: (1) Dave meets his internet girlfriend, who turns out to be quite the looker (sponsored by America Online); (2) Biff's wardrobe for the next three years; (3) fan "Mark Richard" reads the Top Ten list on national TV (silently); (4) Alan punches out a security guard who didn't let his mom into the audience.

07-30-1999: Guest Lance Armstrong beat cancer and won the Tour de France.

07-30-1999: Paul Shaffer's Countdown to the Millennium: there will be no more capers on bagels. (The jackpot is 200 damn dollars.)
