This Dave in History August 30

08-30-1983: The Opening Remarks are interrupted as Dave finds an audience member (Chris Elliott) with a bear trap on his foot.

08-30-1988: Calvert DeForest is Larry "Bud Melman" as Michael Crawford as the Phantom in an audience participation segment called "Ask the Phantom."

08-30-1988: Dan Quayle's Top Ten Pickup Lines - 3. "A girl like you could help a guy forget the irreparable damage he's done to the Republican party."

08-30-1991: Dave guests on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, his next-to-last appearance on the show.

08-30-1993: He's tan, he's rested, he's ready. Late Show debuts on CBS. As on the debut Late Night, Calvert DeForest is the first image on the new show. Tom Brokaw retrieves NBC's intellectual property. Also as on the debut Late Night, Bill Murray is the first guest. Paul Newman asks, "Where the hell are the singing cats?" The world breathes a sigh of relief.

08-30-1994: It's the first year anniversary of the Late Show, as The Beach Boys sing the Top Ten Things From Our First Year. Jonathan Estrada makes a return appearance biting cheese into states.

08-30-1996: Composite rerun features new bits, including Dave and Biff discussing their old tennis careers.

08-30-1996: Composite rerun guests: Howard Stern and Rush Limbaugh.

08-30-2000: "Biff Goes to Summer Camp" bit (at Camp Towanda in the Poconos).

08-30-2000: A big cake that says "Happy 7th Anniversary Late Show" is brought out and explodes. Dave is disappointed with the size of the explosion.

08-30-2000: Act 2 is unusually short at 3 minutes--just the dancers again and Top Ten Signs "The New York Times" is Slipping - 4. Notice on sports page: "All scores are approximate." (Dave is still annoyed at NYT for being way off on the polar ice cap melting frequency.)

08-30-2000: Anna Kournikova Play of the Day: she towels off her face.

08-30-2000: As it's the seventh anniversary of the show, Dave shakes Paul's hand during the playover music ("Hooray for Hollywood"). Later, Dave mentions that there were 1810 Late Night shows, each of them a gem, and 1470 Late Shows so far. Dave's favorite was #1150.

08-30-2000: Dave notes that, while "Survivor" is "appointment TV", the Late Show is "disappointment TV".

08-30-2000: Segment 2 is unusually short at 3 minutes--just the dancers again and Top Ten Signs "The New York Times" is Slipping - 4. Notice on sports page: "All scores are approximate." (Dave is still annoyed at NYT for being way off on the polar ice cap melting frequency.)

08-30-2000: The Late Show 7th Anniversary Dancers (four women) hold up cards: "Congratulations on seven wonderful". (Connie, the fifth dancer, got sick.)

08-30-2000: The short credit crawl ("10-second credits") ends with "special thanks to our friend Marty Zone 1957-1993".
