This Dave in History September 18

09-18-1984: A new Late Night Catch Phrase is selected: "I do and do and do for you kids, and this is the thanks I get!"

09-18-1985: The Top Ten List is born: Top Ten Words That Almost Rhyme with Peas: #4: Ice. Meanwhile, Dave takes Miss America Susan Aiken outside to meet pedestrians on 6th Ave.

09-18-1986: Chris Elliott is Marv Albert as he sings "There's a Place." He brings out his three kids "Marv, Jr.," "Brian," and "Butch," as well as his "wife." All leave the studio walking like Marv with their backs arched.

09-18-1987: Top Ten Questions Asked of Miss America Finalists - 9. If you were shipwrecked on a desert island with Geraldo Rivera, how long would it be before you took your own life?

09-18-1990: How's the Weather? Dave riffles as Barbara Gaines points; tonight's call: a ship at sea in the Caribbean.

09-18-1995: Contestants to a Beauty Contest walk on stage throughout the show. Included are Miss Peanut, Miss Flaming Foliage, and Miss Drumstick.

09-18-1995: Top Ten Least Popular Snapple Flavors: 6. Richard Simmons Tank Top Squeezin's.

09-18-1996: "New Books" bit and "CBS Primetime Schedule Chart" bit.

09-18-1997: Top Ten Surprises in Roger Clinton's Book "Growing Up Clinton" - 2. That "Oprah-Uma" thing was his idea. In all likelihood, this was a rerun of 4/12/95, in which Drew flashes Dave, and we get the "Happy Da" and "Birthday Ve" shirts.

09-18-1998: CBS Mailbag: (1) Dave's favorite guest (Jonathan Estrada) returns; (2) Kenny Sheehan reads the "first President Al Gore joke"; (3) "Secrets of the Late Show Revealed": Biff is hit by a cab; (4) Dave's head is placed on various bodies in still photos.

09-18-1998: Two "Brian" guests: Brian Benben and Brian Setzer.

09-18-2001: Biff Henderson's America (from February) is re-run; Biff visits Baker, Nevada.

09-18-2001: Bryant Gumbel and Denis Leary reflect on the week's events. Tori Amos performs a Tom Waits song, "Strange Little Girls."

09-18-2001: Dave tries some jokes from the desk, including a Rosh Hashanah joke (still writing 5761 on his checks). Paul is not absent for this show.

09-18-2001: Top Ten Things That Almost Rhyme with the Word "Hat": 10) Ham, 9) Hats, 8) Lap, 7) Meat, 6) Snatch, 5) Pabst, 4) Cyber-sex chat, 3) Late Show Stagehand Pat Farmer (appears briefly), 2) Matt Lauer, 1) Ass.
