This Dave in History for January 5

01-05-1979: Dave makes his second appearance as a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

01-05-1983: "You Asked to Hear It Described" has audience members requesting events they'd like to see again. The first one up tonight is a request for Claus Van Bulow's reaction after his not-guilty verdict. All of the band members re-enact the look, with Steve Jordan's coming the closest. Later, Siskel and Ebert play basketball.

01-05-1984: Viewer Mail: Elizabeth Field writes Dave explaining how she wanted to be in "Brush with Greatness" (she once sat on Pavoratti's lap) but was turned down. So Dave calls the producer of "Brush with Greatness," Old Henry, and asks why he hadn't selected Elizabeth. Shaking, Henry (Paul Andor) explains that he has selected participants for 29 years and he has one year left before his pension. He had been mugged after returning from the clinic, and, with no glasses with which to see and hands that were trembling, was unable to write down the contestants' stories. After hearing this tale, Dave fires Old Henry. Shocked, Henry walks away dejectedly as the audience boos their displeasure with Dave.

01-05-1988: Cold Open: Dave announces that the following show is another rerun, but Biff interrupts to correct him.

01-05-1989: Good news: the Goodyear Blimp will be available for the 7th Anniversary Special. Dave thanks Goodyear by having the blimp display on its message area "Firestone sucks."

01-05-1993: In anticipation of a move somewhere, Dave starts offering everything on the NBC set up for sale.

01-05-1994: Can a Guy in a Bear Suit Walk Into a Strip Club? Hey, this is New York; who can't walk into a strip club?

01-05-1994: Top Ten Words That Sound Great When Spoken by James Earl Jones - 5. Neo-Synephrine.

01-05-1995: Dave invites an audience member, Rich, to become Morty's assistant. Biff has him dressed as Morty and, by the end of the show, Rich has replaced him at the producer's podium.

01-05-1995: Top Ten Signs You Bought a Bad Computer - 4. Screen frequently freezes and message comes up "Ain't it break-time, Chester?"

01-05-1996: "Bring Us Something Hot": It's cold outside, so Dave calls the phone booth at the corner and asks anyone who picks up the phone to bring back anything hot. Steven answers, and by the end of the show passes out hot drinks to the audience.

01-05-1996: "Dave goes on an exercise regimen" bit.

01-05-1996: Dave calls a pay phone (external camera), asks the guy who answers to "get us something hot", which the guy does by the end of the show.

01-05-1996: Dave goes out and buys the Top Ten List from a street vendor. Top Ten Reasons Bryant Gumbel is Leaving the "Today Show".

01-05-1996: Guests Dennis Leary, Bridget Hall, and Toad the Wet Sprocket.

01-05-1996: Purchased from a street vendor: Top Ten Reasons Bryant Gumbel Is Leaving The "Today Show" - 7. You try dealing with "Katie Perky" every morning at 5 AM.

01-05-1998: "Christmas gifts" are given away to the audience.

01-05-1998: After Dave and Pat Farmer and another guy drag the Late Show Christmas Tree outside, Dave makes a 2-foot-tall air freshener out of it with the help of a Martha Stewart book.

01-05-1998: Another fantasy vs reality New Year's with Dave: Tonight, Dave recalls his night with leggy supermodels, but Tony interrupts him and demands the truth. So fade to: Biff counts off Dave xeroxing his face at Kinko's.

01-05-1998: Dave recalls New Year's--the fake version, and, prompted by Inky, the real one (involving photocopying Dave's head 1998 times at Kinko's).

01-05-1998: Fake shot of the Empire State Building leaning.

01-05-1998: Leon Pendarvis sits in for Paul, who is attending his mother's funeral. Dave gives Leon a gift (gum).

01-05-1998: Top Ten President Clinton's New Year's Resolutions - 8. At press conferences, answer every question with "Don't go there, girlfriend!"

01-05-1999: "Please Stop Calling Me Monty"--Dave actually explains the rules to the contestant (Brad) this time. Later, Brad (on guitar) sits in with the band.

01-05-1999: Biff is *still* in Times Square with 600,000 drunk people.

01-05-1999: Tonight's new standup comic: Greg Behrendt.

01-05-1999: Top Ten Little Known Facts about Elizabeth Dole.

01-05-2000: "Dave Spends a Day with a Pokemon Fan" (Rick Sheckman).

01-05-2000: Campaign 2000: 3 of the 4 panelists on "The View" (all except Star Jones) think that Hillary should be on the show.

01-05-2000: Fake clip of Lewinsky on Larry King.

01-05-2000: The Late Show Staff give their New Year's Resolutions, including Dave's "sixteen-year-old son" ("Daddy, Hear My Love", a Hallmark Hall of Fame production) and Regis.

01-05-2000: Top Ten Ways the White House Is Different Now That Hillary Has Moved Out.

01-05-2000: Turkish ping pong guy now has a blue dot.
