This Dave in History for January 29

01-29-1981: Dave guest-hosts The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

01-29-1982: Dave is interviewed by Jane Pauley on The Today Show to plug his upcoming Late Night. Jane loses it after Dave describes hairpieces worn by residents of their hometown Indianapolis "as large as endtables."

01-29-1986: The studio audience votes on a new rumor: Dan Rather and Peter Jennings are secretly married. To help spread it, Dave calls Omaha, Nebraska, and talks to Arnie Barnes for the first time.

01-29-1987: In a reprise from last year, the "Actor/Singer" dies once again during Viewer Mail, causing Paul to lose control and scream.

01-29-1991: Top Ten Features of Saddam Hussein's Bunker - 7. Button to launch Scuds hooked up to a Clapper. 3. Always calling his son-in-law a meathead (oh wait, that's a feature of Archie Bunker's place).

01-29-1992: To promote the upcoming Late Night's 10th Anniversary Special, Dave appears on ABC's Barbara Walters Special.

01-29-1996: Guest Richard Simmons dresses as Emmitt Smith. Also, Sparky Mortimer reports from the Super Bowl yet again; we see a still of him with the Cowboy cheerleaders.

01-29-1996: In a clip, Secretary of Education Richard Reilly apparently supports the Quiz Machine. "Megan" from the audience runs the QM today, but she screws up and is replaced by "Mike".

01-29-1997: "O. J. Simpson Juror Do's and Don'ts" bit.

01-29-1997: Dave plays a fake clip from last night: Biff is caught on-camera topless. Then, on tonight's show, Biff does appear onstage topless.

01-29-1997: Guest Dan Rather brings a clip of his coverage of the 1964 inauguration. In another "clip", he grabs Dave's ass.

01-29-1997: Top Ten Other Mistakes Admitted by President Clinton - 6. Got really drunk at inaugural ball and accidentally slept with Hillary.

01-29-1998: Eight-year-old cook Justin Miller distributes his Jurassic Dessert to the audience, as three samples fall to the floor.

01-29-1998: Fake clips of the State of the Union address. Ruth Brown sits in with the band "all night long". Also, Biff Henderson's "Accountants Say the Darnedest Things".

01-29-1998: On Know Your Current Events, second player George (a New Jersey cop) wins dinner, a CD, and *gum*. Later, Dave and Paul chew gum.

01-29-1998: Top Ten Other Monica Lewinsky Nicknames for President Clinton - 2. Commander-in-Briefs

01-29-1999: "Hooray for Hollywood" again. "Shark Week" again. "Paul's Millennium Fun Fact" again. Also, Pat and Kenny Read Oprah Transcripts (Kenny plays Tina Turner). Also, Top Ten Fun Things To Yell While Sliding Down a Fire Pole, read (taped) by New York Firefighters (closing music was apparently "Fire").

01-29-1999: CBS Mailbag: (1) How NBA players occupied themselves during the strike; (2) "YK2" problem--an Oscar for Alan Kalter? (3) Mark Hendren's letter leads to "Anton Fig's Elevator Etiquette"; (4) Paul and Dave shoot paint pellets at Regis.

01-29-2001: Campaign 2000 returns. We see stills of Steph skiing at Loon Mountain. Dave interviews the first Survivor II person voted off, Deb Eaton. She was voted out because she didn't fit into the MTV beach house mentality that was going on. She didn't like "Kimmy." She's a corrections officer in New Hampshire. When asked to predict the winner, she predicts she will win--oh well. Dave says he thought he'd get the Tonight Show.

01-29-2001: Dave calls Art upstairs and compliments him on his new, freshly- pressed shirts. Not a lot of people see his outfits, though; most people who show up to the office are delivering something for the Stengels (head writers). Then Dave talks to Steph; she went skiing in New Hampshire at Loon Mountain. Dave asks her to call KFC to see if he can return the unused chicken.

01-29-2001: Dave phones Nancy Agostini (production coordinator). She thought the Super Bowl pre-game show was really long, and the halftime show was strange, etc. She does Super Bowl Highlights in Barry-White-style, including such language as "Oh Baby", "Out of sight, let's get busy", and "Can't you feel the fire--I'm burning up from raw desire."

01-29-2001: External Camera: George Clarke (a Cowboys fan) on 53rd Street: he blows up a Miller Lite inflatable chair until it explodes.

01-29-2001: Some other guy instead of Calvert wanders out. (No Clinton Classic Joke.) Later, the new segment-5 graphic now gives only the web site as contact info for tickets.

01-29-2001: Super Bowl stuff: Dave says he won the office Super Bowl pool. He complains about the Super Bowl--there's not enough hype. Clip of Jason Sehorn on the show earlier winking (at Dave?), and then a clip of Sehorn winking during the National Anthem at the Super Bowl yesterday. In a Super Bowl post-game clip, confetti lands on Ray Lewis's nose.
