A Betty Buckley question!
Sunday, 23-Jan-2000 10:42:15
I have a strange question about Betty Buckley. I heard once that she worked on some sort
of TV movie with Joan Prather that was about the Barrel Racing circuit. Is this true? Does
anyone know about where I could find that movie?
Thanks so much.
-Gabrielle.
Re: A Betty Buckley question!

Years ago, Betty mentioned it in an interview in TV Guide. However, it didn't happen.
Betty was a barrel racer in rodeos when she was a child which probably inspired her idea.

What in the world is barrel racing? I never heard of it.

Barrel racing is a type of Western horsebackriding competition where the rider tries to
gallop around two barrels and back to the other side of the ring in record time. It is
big at the rodeos! Betty sure is a Texas girl at heart. :)

Barrel racing is a rodeo event where a rider maneuvers a horse around a series of barrels
in a race against the clock.

It's a rodeo event where the rider on his or her horse rides as fast as they can from
start to finish weaving back and forth between barrels.

Betty's new CD

Betty will be releasing a new CD on March 28 titled Heart to Heart. Advance copies were
sold through Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids, so mine arrived yesterday. It is unlike
anything else she has done--quiet, thoughtful pieces with just piano or guitar accompaniment.

At the beginning of that episode the family toasted her new job, which of course was at
the troubled high school. I don't recall any actual mention of her getting her phd, but
as of that episode she was referred to as "Dr. Bradford", so I guess it was inferred that
she had just earned the phd.

Message:On Sunday, the 14th, I had the pleasure of attending Betty's concert in Cincinnati with a few other fans. Her voice was superb as she sang with a full symphony. The program wasn't as long as we would have wished, due to union regulations concerning the length of the concert. She sang her usual repertoire, but added Boulder to Birmingham as an encore. Her ability to sing Amazing Grace, a cappella, and be heard in the upper regions of the hall is phenomenal. If you ever get the opportunity to hear Betty sing, run to the box office for the ticket. You won't be disappointed. Regarding Betty's non-appearance on Inside Edition, I wouldn't have expected her to appear. It was not her favorite part of her career and she has put it behind her. If you haven't seen her lately, she has short gray hair, but otherwise looks the same, just aging like the rest of us: )

My husband and I saw Betty in concert this past summer, and I agree with you, she was phenominal! I just love her voice. She sang "Amazing Grace" that night too, she sounded sooooo good! I enjoyed the concert so much I was able to forget that it was about 95 degrees in the shade!
Name: Julie
Message:
I was at both of the above mentioned concerts... yeah Missy Philly was great! But Cinci was even better... maybe because Betty remembered my birthday and wished me a happy birthday from the stage lol. The acoustics in Cinci were phenominal and Betty literally filled the hall with her voice with no music and no microphone on Amazing Grace. So as Susan said... RUN and see Betty whereever and whenever you can!

I thought the special was tremendous... I too have followed Ms. Buckley's career since her days as Abby. She is a Broadway legend - and one of the most talented singers I've ever heard. Her version of "Meadowlark" never ceases to give me chills - and when I saw her here in Chicago in concert this past spring, she sang "Amazing Grace" without a mic to a house seating 2000 and it was the purest, clearest, loudest thing I'd ever heard. What a talent and the TV show did a great job showing her career.

Did she perform with her group or an orchestra? I much prefer listening to her with an orchestra. She sings so powerfully. When she is with her group, she is quieter, more introspective with her music, I think. Borrow either The London Concert or the Carnegie Hall Concert from the Library. Those are her best works, I think.

She sang "Some Enchanted Evening", "As Time Goes By," "Laura," "Meadow Lark", a song from the play "The Fantasticks" that I think was called "Much More," "Memory," "Amazing Grace," and many others I can't remember the names of.
Remember the episode where she sang in the telethon? That's nothing compared to how she sounds on stage. Her voice is AWESOME!
She looked really good, she's a little heavier than she was on the show (but then she's 20 years older), her hair is real short and looked kind of blond (of course my husband and I had balcony seats and couldn't see her close up).
It was a terrific show; definitely go see her if she's appearing in your area!!

I was there too Missy, Wasn't she great! She always amazes me... no matter if I've seen her 4 times in about a month (as I have this time) or if I haven't seen her in 6 months. I was 4th row center in the orchestra pit seating. Betty has let her hair go naturally gray, though sometimes it looks as if she evens it out by dying it blonder. Betty was in great humor last night too as Missy can attest to, though I know I was dying in the heat so imagine how Betty must have felt under those lights... ugh! Everyone, if you can, catch one of her shows! The ones she does with just her band are fab as well as the ones with a full orchestra... GO!!

BTW... hehe.. notice Abby never corrected him, even after Tom left! :-)

Abby's age was never mentioned except in the episode called "Here We Go Again". Abby thought she was pregnant and was going through Mary's medical journals. When Mary ran her finger down the list of articles, she stopped at one about pregnancy and women over 30. I think David was 23 or 24 when the show began. Betty was nearly 30 in 1977 when she began shooting the episodes she was in. Her character's appearance started in the fall of 1977. Betty was 30 in July 1977. Does that help?
Name: Kal
Message:
I've always figured that she was supposed to be in her mid 30's. By the third season, David had to be about 26 or 27, which makes her just 10 or so years older - definately closer to David's age than Tom's. I remember that in her first episode, Mary was moving in with her boyfriend, and Abby said to Tom, "I understand Mary's decision, but I agree with you - so hang in there". I think that was the whole rationale for having Abby so much younger - she could easily relate to the kids since she wasn't much older, but she loved Tom, therefore could understand his point of view. It makes her a good link.
Name: Julie
Message:
Thanks...I remember that scene where Mary scans down the journal, I had thought Abby's age was specifically mentioned once, ie: 30 years old. Guess I was mistaken, but we can just assume Abby was about 10 years older than David I guess. If I further analyze this...Abby's husband Frank died in Vietnam, which ended in 1970(right?)and I'll assume Abby was at least 21-22 years old when he died, which puts her at 29-30 years old when she first appears on the show.

Message:
Actually Vietnam ended in 1975, so she could be slightly younger.

Message:From previous posts, you may have learned that I am a huge Betty Buckley fan. I saw EIE in its original go around and got hooked on her voice. Over the years, I have attended musicals and concerts in which she has performed. Last Monday, the 3rd, I was privileged to hear her perform in Chicago. If any of you have the opportunity, go see her. You won't be disappointed. Her concert schedule can be found at www.playbill.com. Scroll down the left side of the home page to find the link to her site. The little songs she sang on the show do not do justice to her talent. If you don't know, she also has five CDs as well as the Broadway cast recordings of 1776, Cats, The Mystery of Edwin Drood & Triumph of Love. There is also a 4 song recording from Sunset Blvd. which is really hard to find now. If you know all this, please forgive me. If not, find her CDs and enjoy!

Message:If Betty was born in 1947, that makes her 30 when she started the show. She looked a heck of a lot older than 30, I would say more like 40. When you compare her to Laurie Walters , who apparently was also born in 47' she looks way older. I am 3 months from my 30th bd, and I feel no comparison with her, if I was with Tom it would look like I was his daughter, not wife. anybody agree?

I thought Betty looked to be in her 30s and much younger than Tom. Laurie Walters was supposed to look younger than Betty, remember, so she was made up and dressed to look younger. Abby was supposed to be in her 30s. It (her age) was even mentioned in one show.
Name: Jodi
Message:
I think they made Abby up to look older by her hair, makeup, and dress. She seemed to be slightly underweight, too, which made her face look older and thinner. They put Laurie in those silly little ribbon ties and clothes that somebody in her late teens and early 20s might weear. (I know--I did.)This may be bordering blasphemy, but didn't she have a drug problem at one time? If so, that puts the age on a person. I hope I'm wrong, because she's probably my favorite character on the show.

Yes Betty did have a substance abuse problem at the beginning of her run in EIE. But I always have thought that Betty looked young and beautiful in all the episodes of EIE. In the latter years of EIE, when Abby had her hair long and Joanie had her hair permed, I think Abby looks MUCH younger than Joanie, much more than the actual few months that seperate Laurie and Betty in real life. Message: I have noticed while watching the show again that Abby hums or sings a little here and there in episodes other than the ones featuring the family talents. She sang "Happy Birthday" to Tom in one episode. The other day, she hummed while talking to Tom about her mother's visit. She sang a little of "What Child is This?" in the Christmas episode. Having followed Betty's career since I first heard her on the show, these little snippets popped out this time around. By the way, I just got my copy of "Triumph of Love", Betty's Broadway show from last year. Any one who likes to hear her sing should get this CD. It was a cute little show.

Having heard Betty Buckley sing live over fourteen times, I know how exciting it is to experience the sheer talent of her powerful voice. I saw her on Rosie O'Donnell once and she was talking about how oppressive the EiE producers were...often discouraging her from her weekly flights to New York for singing lessons saying that she'd never be more than just a tv mother. I'm so proud of all that she's accomplished in light of this. It's wonderfully ironic that those "little snippets" of singing on the show proved to be an eery preminition of the booming success Betty was bound for as a singer.
