Message:I know I've posted this train of thought before but coming from a large family myself ( 8 kids ) I know my dad would NOT let us just hang around the house in our 20's with no jobs & not at least contributing to the food bill ( which believe me can be very high !) Why couldn't David take in a sister to share expenses ? I know if my older sister had an apt I'd be there a LOT! I just find it unrealistic how the girls are fromping around with silly stupid jobs ( dressing up like a banana split ) & then quitting the job 2 days later. They always have these huge breakfasts that must run Tom dry ( I know he had a good job but no one could afford to eat like that every meal with 10 people in the family !).

But... they all were going to school, in some families its ok to live at home and not work as long as you go to school full time. But what young adult would not want to work part time to have your own $$ at least and not have to beg ass off Dad. The breakfast thing is ridiculous, way too much food for everyday, thats like a weekend treat for me.

There is an episode where Joannie is defending an "artiste" sponger that she's interested in for not working. One of her sisters (Mary, I think) really lights into her and tells her about all of them doing jobs that they don't like so that they can achieve their goals. So I guess they were supposed to be working at something. They all had plenty of the latest styles of clothing. As far as the breakfasts, I always laugh at TV families who actually have sit-down breakfasts together, with place mats, water glasses, and all the silverware. I don't even sit down and I usually drink my breakfast shake while getting ready. (I do lean over the sink to eat a banana!) And lest this be blamed on working women, my mother didn't work outside the home, but we all ate at different times in the 60s.
And water--I can't believe anybody with 8 kids wouldn't have added a bath or two downstairs. If I were Abby, Tom's study would have been MINE, and it would be an extra bedroom plus bath.

I don't really recall all that many "Big" breakfasts. I remember them eating a lot of cereal and fruit. Also, didn't the older kids have some sort of job. Joanie at the theatre, Susan at the day care center, etc.
